The rays of warm-colored light began stripping away the beauty of the starry night sky, signaling the start of another interesting day for the Lee siblings. The eldest, Seunghwan, moved about their small apartment, already awake and on a mission.
"Hey, wake up right now..." Seunghwan called out, standing at the threshold of the twin's room. "I want you to wake up Yoojin. Don’t you dare sleep with her again. Are you understanding what I’m talking about?" His voice was firm, with just a hint of annoyance, as he shot a glare at his younger brother, Sangmin, who was still lazily snuggling into his bed.
Sangmin groaned, pulling his blanket tighter. "Okay, I will wake her up. Just give me five more minutes. I’m so tired right now..."
"No, no more 'five minutes'! Wake up! We’re going to be late for school. I’m starting breakfast now, so get up and go wake her." Seunghwan wasn’t having it this time.
"Fine, fine! I’ll go wake her now. You’re such a nag..." Sangmin grumbled, pushing himself out of bed and stumbling toward his sister's bedroom.
Sangmin opened the door quietly, expecting to find Yoojin still asleep, as she usually was. But to his surprise, Yoojin was sitting up in bed, wide awake, her eyes sparkling as if she had just stepped out of a dream.
"Oh, Oppa. What are you doing here?" Yoojin blinked, startled by her brother’s sudden appearance. "Is there something I can help you with, or...?"
Sangmin froze in the doorway, eyes wide with surprise. "What? You’re already awake? I thought I’d have to wake you up."
Yoojin chuckled softly, her voice like a melody. "I woke up because I heard someone singing. It was so beautiful, Oppa. The voice was so sweet, it was like I was in a fairytale."
Sangmin stood there, processing her words. "Wait, you woke up because you heard someone singing?" His brow furrowed, confused.
"Yeah... but it wasn’t you, and definitely not Seunghwan's either," she teased, her smile mischievous.
"What? You mean, you don't think our voices are sweet?" Sangmin scoffed, half-joking but also a little defensive. "You know that both of us are pretty popular at school because of our singing and good looks, right?"
Yoojin raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a playful smirk. "Your voice isn’t nearly as sweet as Seunghwan’s. And honestly, he’s the more handsome one too."
Sangmin’s eyes widened in mock offense. "What?! Are you serious? You’re my little sister, and you say this to me?"
Before he could react further, they heard Seunghwan’s voice call out from the kitchen. "Sangmin-ah, have you woken up Yoojin? If she’s already awake, please get her ready. And tell her to stop daydreaming. We need to go soon!"
"I already woke up that stupid little brat, you moron!" Sangmin shouted back, clearly annoyed.
Seunghwan, though, only laughed. "Hah! What did you call me? A moron?"
"Yes, I did! You’re a stupid, idiotic older brother," Sangmin shot back nonchalantly, then turned toward the bathroom to begin getting ready.
Seunghwan’s face twisted in frustration, but he kept his cool. He was already finished cooking breakfast for himself and his siblings, knowing full well how chaotic mornings could be with the twins.
As he entered the living room, he saw Yoojin already dressed in her school uniform, sitting at the table. "Yoojin-ah, come eat. I’ve already made breakfast. I need to get ready."
"Oppa, have you eaten already?" Yoojin asked, tilting her head in concern.
"Don’t worry about me. I already ate," Seunghwan reassured her, his tone softening. "But if your brother Sangmin already had his breakfast, both of you should head out. I’ll catch up with you."
"Okay, Oppa." Yoojin stood up from the table and walked toward the door.
"Oh, wait," Seunghwan called after her. "Can you remind Sangmin to close all the windows and doors before he leaves?"
"Okay, Oppa. I’ll tell him."
As she ate her breakfast, a thought nagged at her mind. The memory of the mysterious voice in her dream—so enchanting, so clear—lingered.
Who was that singing? she thought. Why was I dreaming of that song?
She shook her head. "It was probably just a dream. But I hope I hear that voice again tonight... I can’t wait to hear it again."
Just then, Sangmin burst back into the room. "Yah, why are you talking to yourself like a crazy person? Are you sure you’re not losing your mind? Maybe you should check yourself into a mental hospital for talking like that."
Yoojin's eyes narrowed. "Shut up, you idiot. No one would ever date you with that kind of behavior. You’re just a big, annoying jerk."
Sangmin raised his hands in mock surrender, but his grin didn’t disappear.
Before the situation could escalate further, Seunghwan’s voice rang out from the kitchen, clearly exasperated. "Sangmin! Why do you always have to annoy people first thing in the morning? Can’t you just keep quiet for once?"
Sangmin, never one to back down, smirked. "Sorry, hyung. If I shut my mouth, there’s no fun left."
Seunghwan rolled his eyes. "Just keep talking until I ask you to stop."
"Ha! That’s my punishment?" Sangmin said, his grin widening. "Too easy."
"Yes, keep talking. I said KEEP TALKING until I ask you to stop."
Sangmin’s smile faltered. He knew Seunghwan wasn’t joking. When Seunghwan said "keep talking," it meant non-stop. So, he reluctantly complied and began rambling.
The trio made their way to school, the silence between them only broken by Sangmin’s endless chatter. When they arrived at school, Seunghwan turned to Sangmin and Yoojin. "Sangmin, walk Yoojin to her classroom. I have some morning duties to do. And remember, don’t fight today. If you start it, Sangmin, there will be consequences."
Sangmin rolled his eyes but nodded. "Okay. No more fights. Go, do your work."
Seunghwan looked at him one last time. "Can you respect me just a little bit, even if we’re the same age?"
Sangmin chuckled dryly. "Why should I? We’re not identical twins, after all. I don’t owe you anything, right? Go do your duties, Seunghwan."
Seunghwan’s patience was wearing thin. "I don’t get it, Sangmin. You’re my brother, but it feels like I have to constantly watch over you. What did I ever do to deserve this? I’ve been patient with you. But every day, you keep pushing it."
Sangmin’s eyes widened at Seunghwan’s unusually serious tone. He didn’t expect that. "Hey, wait a minute... Are you really mad at me?"
Seunghwan’s gaze hardened, and he walked away without another word. Sangmin stood there for a moment, stunned, before turning to Yoojin.
"Yoojin... Do you think I should apologize to him? I think I messed up... Should I wait for him to cool down or...?"
Yoojin looked at him with a gentle smile. "I think you should apologize, but give him some time to calm down. You know Seunghwan Oppa—he’s not the type to stay mad forever."
"Thanks, Yoojin." Sangmin sighed, feeling guilty. He walked her to her classroom as Seunghwan had instructed.
When Yoojin entered her class, her friends greeted her, and she couldn’t help but smile. But before they could chat, she had something on her mind.
"Guys, I have something I need to tell you. But please, don’t judge me..."
