Owen's POV

A growl erupted from my mouth when I heard Cole's words. I was angry, and rightfully so. Cece had just turned 16, and she was still just a kid. I placed my arm out to block her from Cole's dark eyes and pushed her behind me.

Is he crazy? Declan yelled in my mind. He was growling just as loudly as me, and this suddenly pulled me back a little from my anger. Declan was reckless, and his stance was too threatening. I mindlinked an order to him to gain control of himself before he did anything rash too fast. He glared at me unhappily but I felt his anger dissipate slightly.

Cece cleared her throat, breaking us out of our silent battle. She enclosed her small hand around my forearm. "Owen," She said, glancing nervously between the three of us.

My gaze softened. She was my kid sister and she was scared. I could feel the fear radiating off of her. My wolf didn't like that, and the brother side of me didn't either. "C, go upstairs," I ordered, nodding towards the steps. I mind linked Carlos to come closer and grab onto her. He had been watching from behind, and shook the shocked expression from his face when I ordered him to help.

Cole growled again, this time more prominently at Carlos as he took a step forward. Carlos paused. "Cece," Cole said, reaching for her once more. The look on his face told me everything I needed to know: he was trying to get her to him. That was not going to happen. Declan snarled before I could. Alpha Jared was quick to react this time as well. I kept my protective stance in front of her as Alpha Jared stepped forward. Even though I trusted him with my life, all of our lives, I had no idea how this was going to play out.

It is customary that when werewolf mates find each other, they begin their life with each other in either pack. Since Cole would be Alpha, Cece would be expected to move to Red River Pack and take on her role.

But she was only 16. While it had been tradition, it was frowned upon in this day and age to allow someone so young to take over a pack. It made more sense to wait until she was 18, had matured, and felt ready for the position. Throwing her into it now only put her more at risk, and made the pack more vulnerable to attacks. She could be considered their weak link.

The only problem was what Cole would think about that. When I glanced up at him and met het his stony eyes, I could tell this wasn't something he was willing to negogiate. That angered me.

"Boys!" Alpha Jared thundered loudly, forcing the room to go still. Alpha Jared was not my Alpha, but he was someone I heavily respected and owed a lot to. I shut my mouth despite my wolf's protests. Before any of us could say anything else, he stepped forward, hands raised on either side of us as a signal to pause. "We did not come here for trouble," He spoke with a stern glare. "This is a reunion! We will act as such. Now, this is a surprise," He glanced between Cole and Ce then, and she hid her face behind me. I instictively drew her closer to me. I couldn't lose her, not yet. Alpha Jared looked at me and Declan again. "But there is no reason that we can't settle down and discuss this over the nice meal Luna Carol had prepared for us."

It was quiet for a moment while Cole and his father mind linked. It was clear there was some sort of disagreement going on between them.

"Well, I'm hungry," Carlos said suddenly, causing all eyes to turn to him. Alpha Jared smiled at him while I rolled my eyes. "Let's eat." He was looking down at Cece, grabbing her arm gently and pulling her out from where she was standing. When she came forward, I noticed just how nervous she was. Her blue eyes darted between the people in the room, and she pressed herself to Carlos' side.

Cole growled. "Who is he?" He demanded, staring at me. He was talkinf about Carlos. Cole had stood up taller, and with the flash of yellow in his eyes I could tell his wolf was at bay.
