Asher heaved the large box up the stairs of the new house, and with a heavy sigh he plopped it down, taking a deep breath of the fresh air, that seemed to smell addictive after the hours long ride in the stuffy car.
"I think that's the last one!" he said cheerfully. Behind him his daughter tapped away on her phone, he frowned when he got no response. "Alright, how about you go take a shower while I prepare dinner. Your stuff should be in the room you chose already."
"Mmmm, sure thing dad," she said with a large yawn, pocketing her phone. Asher watched as she ran up the stairs, two at a time. Sighing, he dusted his hands off and made way to the kitchen to put away the fresh groceries he had ordered.
Humming to himself, Asher turned on the stove and grabbed some tomatoes, butter and onions as he prepared some soup. It was Raven's favorite, and he decided she would like it after a tiring and stressful day.
Once the grilled cheese was done he loaded it onto plates, scooped the soup into bowls and set up the table. "Raven! Dinner's ready," he called.
"Coming!" she said, and a few moments later he heard her come down the stairs, long wet hair swinging behind her. She was dressed in a fresh t-shirt and she took her place by the table.
The pair ate in silence, only occasionally interrupted by the clinking of utensils against the plate. When he was almost finished he pushed his chair back a little.
"I'm going to take you to your new school tomorrow," he said tentatively. "I know it's all very... stressful moving around but if you ever need anything I'm here for you," Raven waved her hand.
"I know I know. It'll be fine," she said. Asher smiled.
"Ok, if you say so. Tomorrow I'm also going to try and contact the local pack. I'll try and find a new job opening somewhere..." he said with a sigh.
"Don't worry dad, it'll be fine. Besides if they give you any trouble I can totally kick their asses for you," she said confidently. Asher rolled his eyes.
"Suuure you can," he teased, "I'll do the dishes tonight but we're going to get some chores set up soon. Anyways, off to bed with you, you need to get up early tomorrow morning." Raven put her dishes in the sink and went upstairs.
After sitting on his phone for a while, Asher stood up to do the dishes. Digging through a few boxes put to the side he found one with a pack cleaning supplies. Ripping the plastic wrapping apart he took out a clean sponge, as well as a half-used bottle of dish soap.
Once he finished, he loaded them into the dishwasher and sighed. Absentmindedly rubbing his neck he frowned when he realized he was rubbing the faded bite mark again.
It had started acting up recently, tingling and occasionally shooting sharp pain into his neck. So maybe he was a bit paranoid, but that wasn't the only reason they moved. They weren't able to pay for the old house, and this one was a bit old and run-down but at least it was cheaper.
Deciding to take his mind off of such troubling things, Asher decided to head up towards his room. He ran his hand against the worn wooden railing as he slowly walked upstairs. The room was smaller, smaller than the old house but it would do. The walls were made of planked wood, with a moderately high ceiling slanted upwards, and narrow skylights installed. There was a mattress plopped on the floor and Asher tugged one of his blankets from the box, then curled himself onto the mattress.
Life was... so lonely. Werewolves weren't meant to be solitary creatures, they were pack creatures. The only thing that kept him sane was his daughter, and the old claiming mark on his neck, a whisper of a connection to his old pack.
However, it didn't matter anyway. The only people they had were themselves, and almost every pack they ran through met them with hostility, or at least didn't openly welcome him. Hopefully things would be better here. New town, new life, right? With a yawn, Asher rubbed his face against the soft fluffy blanket to try and calm his mind, and slowly let his thoughts be carried away into another restless night of sleep.
