Ronnie's POV

Mystic Falls had always been the most boring town on earth to me. Nothing exciting ever happened there. It was the same people, the same streets, the same everything every single day for the last 17 years of my life.

The town I lived in was the type of town where you would grow up, get married and have kids, and then die there. It was a town where you stayed your entire life, but if you were lucky, you would get fleeting moments where you could escape.

The summer before junior year was my fleeting moment. I had spent the entire summer in Paris, away from the soul sucking town. But, now that I was back in town and I saw the familiar houses and roads, I already felt it sucking out any happiness I acquired while away

"I just don't understand why we couldn't stay in Paris." I sighed sadly, looking over at my mother who was sitting next to me in the drivers seat of the car. I almost wanted to slap myself from how spoiled I sounded. "I could've homeschooled or something."

My mother, in all her beautiful glory, let out an angelic chuckle. "Veronica, dear, you're not built for homeschooling. Plus, you're life is here. Your friends are here."

"I could've made new ones." That was probably true, but I couldn't of made friends like the ones I have now. Ones I love unconditionally and would do anything for.

"Well, in that case, it's because I have a life here." Mother rolled her eyes. "And, anyway, do you think your father would uproot and move to Paris? He's lived here his whole life and is hellbent on growing old and dying here."

What she said was very true. My father loved this town with his whole heart, for unknown reasons to me and mother, as we both hated this town with a passion. We were built for the city— the buzzing streets, the bright lights, and even the rude pedestrians that came with it. My father and brother, however? They thrived in small towns with nice people that barely had any crime, and empty streets after 9 o'clock.

"Well," I unbuckled my seat belt as we finally stopped in front of our house I hadn't entered in three months. "With the rate I'm going at, I'll die here too."

Grabbing my suitcases from the backseat, I huffed as I sat them on the ground and looked up at the big house in front of me with a melancholic feeling. However, that feeling didn't last long when I saw my little brother throw open the front door and race down the porch steps, running straight into my awaiting arms.

"Luke!" I grinned, squeezing him tightly before moving away and bending down to his height, ruffling his dark hair. "How you doing, brat?"

"Pretty freaking good! I got everything I wanted for my birthday!" He grinned widely, showing off his blue braces he had gotten at the beginning of the year.

His tenth birthday was two weeks ago and since he had opted to stay in Mystic Falls for the summer, my mom and I both missed it. I couldn't help but feel guilty for missing it. I had tried to convince our mother to go back earlier, but as always, her work came first and just insisted on sending him gifts instead of delivering them in person.
