The walls of April's Bone castle stood proudly in the morning's rising sun, while the future king raised himself up from his sweet slumber, his personal maid looking strangely at him, as the young man had never woke up so early in the morning, usually causing lady Susan to smash her twin brother with one of his silk white pillows. But this day something had awoken Edmund, making him confusingly happier than he was ever before, maybe because it was his special day, well his twin sister's too, of course, still that wasn't the answer. Every 18th birthday was interesting , but when it came to him, it was far more important, because as a young monarch and the chosen one to rule the country, it was the coronation day, his coronation day, a day that would define him forever, until ....
"Wake up you ninny!" lady Susan spoke as she threw a pillow at her brother, Edmund opening his sleepy eyes. "Caspian's wedding is today, dear twin brother and I suppose you do not want to be late, as neither do I, so wake up!"
"Why do we even need to go anyway? We are not relatives, so that's an excuse and Father's plan to get you married to him, once you're 18, clearly fell out of place, so basically we don't need to attend the ceremony." the young prince said getting out of bed, gathering his ceremony clothes, picked by his beloved father. He almost forgot it was Caspian's big day, not his. And so he brushed off the thought and got dressed with the help of Susan, who constantly fought against her will with Edmund's horrible silver bow tie.
The two royal twins embarked in the blue chariot with their parents, saying goodbye to their servants, as their journey to Telmar would take a while to pass, and the two ceremonies they would attend also had their way of managing time. Mary, Susan's personal maid and most loyal friend to the princess, shed a few silly tears when the souverans disappeared in the cold late winter fog, the young lady of Archeland's light pink handkerchief still slightly waving in the wind.
Time took it's course and soon they found themselves sitted in the back row, watching as a beautiful blonde women, dressed in white lace made her way towards a smiling man, with a crown on his mopped hair. He could never understand what anyone had seen in him to let him marry such an elegant lady, while he, Edmund, so young and handsome could never get any lady to talk to him, properly I mean, as the girls always felt strange having a conversation with somebody like him. If he ever had the opportunity to have a wife like the future queen of Telmar, then he would've treated her better than any other kings as Caspian would do.
There he stood, listening to the happy new married couple, as they said their vows, taking each other's ring and smiling so brightly as it seemed that no one but them were there, and so, for the first time in his life, Edmund felt as lonely as he really was, his thoughts drifting off from the boring ceremony to a beautiful river not so far away from the castel. He knew his way to the blessed waters of his teenage years, because it were the only things that kept him alive when Susan's marriage to the king was at the start and they had to visit Telmar almost every winter and summer. The waters weren't actually "blessed", but one time when he was 15 he swore he saw Aslan, the great lion itself, drinking from the river and then disappearing into the deep woods after that. Sure, that was a story he never told anyone about, because let's be serious, who would belive him? Maybe he was the future king of the land, but he was a delusional teenager as well, due to his sickness at that time. His dear grandmother had died from old age in her sleep without saying goodbye to him, except the last words spoke to his family "Tomorrow comes a new day.", which he embraced tightly in her memory. But no more sadness.
Edmund threw his now shoeless legs in the freezing river, not caring if it was winter at all or if he would look stupid after, enjoying the little giggly sensations sent by the slow waves of glistening water on his feet. Everything seemed so rushed and beautiful moments like this felt really far away from being probably real, not so far ago. He dared to wander what the bride thought about her marriage and how her life would change drastically in the past few months that were to come. What would it be to wake up one morning and find someone in your bed and be happy about it? To be happy about giving your heart and soul to another person and to let yourself be controlled by an exstatic feeling of devotement towards anyone at all in a romantic way?
"You know what, dear Edmund?" a gentle voice sang to his ears, her graceful figure settling onto the snow covered surface, white as her long flowy dress. "I asked myself the same thing as you did when I was young, and then I met Him. He taught me that if I ever wanted to feel love, it wouldn't be so hard at all, only if I let myself truly belive in it. Maybe you should try to belive in it too, at least for me." The boy looked into her glittering eyes surprised, as he always had known the bride's eyes were blue, not violet. She gave him a kiss on the cheek and ruffled his dark hair.
The prince watched as the young woman left as quickly as she came. Maybe she was right, maybe he, himself, could learn to embrace love as she did. After all there were potential ladies and pricesses willing to take him as their husband and king, but after all that was no such problem. The problem was if the chosen one to rule by his side, was not the one he loved. What would it be to live above the same ceiling with someone you're supposed to love? To live a life trying to love someone you knew you could never embrace, with such caring innto your arms? And worst of all, to not have the possibility to set the marriage off, only because you have royal blood? These questions and far more, wondered in his mind, spinning his head round and round. Only time would decide who the future king was to marry and if it was the right choice, for the kingdom's sake.
Slowly he got up and went straight for the place in the horizon, his shoes in his hands, the pants he wore slightly wet at the bottom, due to the river. He saw beautiful sights on his way back, but nothing compared to what he had home. Some little animals started to run when he got closer to them, which was strange because he wasn't so scary at all. Maybe that was his destiny, to be feared of by others, to not get married or to have an heir to the throne after him. If he didn't get married his throne would go to Susan, who could easily marry any noble man in two seconds, if she wanted, of course. Only an insane man would decline the opportunity to have Susan as his wife, a beautiful young woman, intelligent, graceful and gentle, but their parents still wondered if no one would take her into their arms and life, a pretty stupid question, if you ask Edmund. He continued his walk until he saw a girl running towards him with a big smile on her face.
"Edmund, ohh, Edmund! Guess what!? " she called out to him waving a letter in the air, not letting her brother speak about his journey to the river. "I met prince Peter of Narnia and he invited us to his palace, in NARNIA! And that's not the only interesting thing, he has a twin sister, the same age as us, who will be the future monarch, like you!"
"I thought you might eventually meet someone you'd like today, actually. Maybe he's the one, sister? What do you think?" he asked looking teasingly at her, the young princess' face getting redder and redder. 'At least she found someone.', Edmund thought to himself, his mind slowly wandering around a question. How was the future queen of Narnia? He heard her name was Lucy, but nothing less than that, so it was partially normal to think about the possibility of marrying her, even if he didn't know the girl at all.
Soon the royal family of Archeland left Telmar and Edmund couldn't take his mind of what the bride had said to him at the river. 'To truly belive in love.' , he wandered, a blurry image of a young lady with slightly red hair, reading a book while she sat on the floor near a chimney, appearing in his mind as he slowly started to brightly smile, his head bowing to the ground, silent giggles coming from his mouth. His sister looked strangely at him, not knowing that her twin was actually dreaming of the future narnian queen. Maybe Edmund could learn how to love after all, with a little bit of help from a certain stubborn princess.
"Sister, when are we going to Narnia?" the boy asked exchanging glances with the girl. Susan opened the letter from Peter and read some of it. She looked back at Edmund and happily spoke.
"Well, here it says in two days we'll have a chariot ready to take us there, so I suppose we'll leave on Sunday morning."
