My heart leaps out of my chest as I sit up to the sound of a bang. I couldn't tell whether it was a dream or not. I quickly find out when another bang comes from the front door, I look over the back of the couch and see Mount stumble backwards. The picture frames on the wall rattles, "What was that?" I whisper pushing myself off the couch as my chest pounds in fear. I could see light flooding in, the bang must've been the front door flying open and hitting the wall. "Mount?" I call over to him completely awake now, I round the couch to get to him but two figures rush in forcing me to a stop. "Get away from him!" His mother's voice yells. I've never heard her sound so afraid, she's always been such a quiet and respectful woman. My body froze mid step looking down to the front door. "I thought they weren't supposed to be back till Friday!"
He looked at me in just as much confusion, but both of his parents look furious. Nose's flared, tense body language, the distance they're keeping between us was obvious. "Come here now!" His mom says firmy as his dad stares at me, his entire face beat red. She doesn't bother waiting for him, stomping forward she grabs Mount by the arm. His hesitation clearly pissed her off, her face screwed into pure disgust. I would've never guessed that woman could show so much anger, people would compliment her days on end on how she could never kill a fly. By the look of her face, she could massacre anything that stands in her way. Looks like I'm in the line of fire.
"Azure, don't more." His dad snapped reaching behind him. I had barely taken a breath, but with the threat of what he's reaching for I take a step back in panic. He yells at me again and pulls a gun from his pants. My brain swarms in flight mode, I stumble back almost tripping on the corner of the coffee table. "Dad, what is that? What are you doing?" Mount protests against his mother's grip. Where is everyone getting guns from?!
I can tell his dad's hands were shaking. He kept the gun pointed towards the floor which made me feel a little better. Although the gun itself keeps my heart racing. I can see that he's hesitant to pull it on me, I look around for something to shield myself. "I told you not to move Azure!" I turn back to him, the gun rising. "Put the gun down!" Mount yelled jumping forward and grabbing his father's arm. As if Mount weighed nothing, he shoves him back at his mother who wraps her skinny arms around him. His parents were such a beautiful couple, his mother's gorgeous when she isn't snarling angrily at me.
"Honey" She snaps. "You were always scum to this neighborhood." He says, the gun stays low but intimidating now. "Don't do anything rash, listen to him." My eyes jump between them. Why is this happening to me? What did I do wrong? I feel like I'm frozen in time. If I move I die, if I stay here I die. I'm going insane. I don't want to die. I try to catch my breath, this is all in my head. It has to be, right? "You're a monster, just like your father! I should've gotten rid of you a long time ago!" His voice rumbles the entire house. "Stop! She didn't do anything!" Mount announced.
A harsh laugh comes from his mother, "So, she didn't tell you?" I looked at Mount, tell him what? "That girl killed her father!" It feels like she had just shot me in the chest right then and there. I immediately step forward to defend myself but Mount's father raises his arm. I hold my breath looking down the barrel of the gun, "Don't fucking move!" This isn't real, it can't be.
"You have it all wrong!" I squeezed out, tears welding. My eyes are so swollen, I can feel the weight of the passed 24 hours. Maybe I'm hallucinating. A interrupting sound of pounding boots on the porch outside draws all of our attention. The light feeding inside catches large silhouettes. "Lower your weapon!" A voice screams out of nowhere. Mount's father quickly lowers his hand and turns his body to whoever was out the door. He quickly drops the gun on the floor and steps back. Four men in black jog inside, the closest on kneels and picks up the gun without taking his eye off him. I round the coffee table backing into the TV. One of the soldier's turn and focus on me, "Stay where you are, do not move!" He holds a much larger weapon in his hands, I have no other choice but to keep still.
