"Daddy, leave him alone!" I screamed, the age of five, at the time.
I watched as my brother got beat by my father for not being the best, not being perfect, not being the "masterpiece" my father wanted him to be. My brother lay there on the cold, hard floor.
"Get up!" my father, Enji Todoroki, commonly known as Endeavor, hollered at him, ignoring my screams of terror at the image before my young, innocent eyes.
I rushed over to my brother and reached for his hand, desperate to do something in order to help him. My brother, ruthless as ever, slapped my hand away. He was strong and independent. He didn't accept help from others.
"Shoto!" I heard my young voice whine.
My brother stood up and faltered slightly in his stance.
"Go," he said, refusing to face me.
"But, Shoto, I-"
"I said, go!"
He was right in telling me to go. I wasn't supposed to be there. I was supposed to remain on the other side of the house, along with the other failures. Shoto was the only one who had the chance of someday being perfect because he had inherited an equal amount of both mother and father's quirks.
In that moment, I saw the hatred in my brothers eyes, and from then on, I never felt the same way about my father. I lost respect for him and became somewhat rebellious. I never understood how someone could act so cruel towards such a small child. There had to be something physically lacking in his brain. But in my father's eyes, we weren't children, we were projects, that was just the way things were throughout my household, growing up.
It only got worse once he sent my mother away.
"Dad, can we please play with Sho Sho-"
"Who?"
"I mean," my voice quieted, "Shoto..."
Fuyumi, my older sister, wrapped her arms around me.
"Samarah, you know we can't. I know you love Shoto, but..." she looked down, a frown across her face.
"Fuyumi is absolutely right. You will rarely ever spend time with Shoto, and you know this. So I don't want to hear you ask again! Ever!"
Father towered over me, a look of hatred in his eyes. I never understood why as a kid, and always tried to win him over. Of course he never cared, so I merely grew to despise him.
That all happened years ago! We manage, now, and I've never been closer with Shoto. Oh, he's my older brother, by the way. We're twins, but he was born first. But of course he's super protective. I don't mind. It's nice to feel loved. One time, this boy pulled my hair, and Shoto used his quirk to scare him off, but was super close to injuring the kid. Anyways, when the day came for Shoto to go off to U.A. High School, the school for heros, I was super worried. I really cared for Shoto. He was more of a father to me than our actual dad. And of course Fuyumi was like my mother. She was like a mother to all of us, since mom was staying in the mental hospital, thanks to father.
"Shoto," I hugged him, "are you sure you'll be alright?"
"Yes," Shoto replied, wrapping one arm around me. "Don't worry. I plan on sticking around for you, unlike some people."
Shoto grabbed his stuff, and headed off to U.A. It was a little hard for me. Accidents happen, especially when you're training to be a hero. Bad thoughts filled my mind as I sat at the dining room table.
"Hey, don't worry so much. Shoto will be fine," Fuyumi approached with a gentle smile. "He's a strong kid. You know that."
"I do...but I still worry..."
"No, need, sis. Besides, Shoto wouldn't want you to worry. Instead, how about cheering him on?"
I thought about what she said. She was right...but I couldn't shake the feeling...
"Hey, maybe you should have applied to that hero school," Fuyumi mused.
"But, sis, I'm...you know I'm quirkless..."
"So? You're still one heck of a bad ass."
I looked down at the table. It would be a lot of fun to be a hero, but a quirkless one...? I knew it was hopeless. Not to mention, I doubted my father would ever let me go to U.A., but I suppose I could fantasize about it. I often lived in a fictional world to escape the pain from the real one... I am a writer. I loved writing back then, and I still do. Shoto always loves to read my writings. He thinks I should be an author, I don't know though...
Suddenly, I heard a scream outside.
My imagination?
I looked up at Fuyumi and realized she was wearing an expression of fear herself. It was real! I shot up and sprinted out the door. I wasn't in control of my body at the time, I was simply moving. I looked left, then right. I turned and saw a villain, his sharp teeth glinting in the sunlight. He was ghoul like, drool dripping from his sharp fangs. He had a woman in his grasp, his claws closing in on her neck.
I ran up to the thing, jumping kicking it right in its ugly face. It faltered and dropped the woman, who then ran off in terror. The villain then had its sights set on me. I ran as it chased after me. I dashed into the shed and hauled out my shotgun. I cocked it, aimed it at the villain, then pulled the trigger, causing him to fall to the ground, but he quickly bounced back.
"Damn it," I muttered.
I shot it again, still no success. I observed the thing meticulously. There had to be some weak spot, some soft point, something. There had to be a way to at least knock this guy out. What even was his quirk? Turning into a ghoul? Do ghouls have weaknesses?
An idea came to me and I rushed back to the shed, dropping the shotgun and bringing out my giant spear. With all my might, I swung that thing straight forward, aiming for his chest...but nothing happened...
"What a brave young lady!" a man exclaimed, holding the villain by the neck.
All Might had snatched him up without me even noticing.
"Are you-"
"Yes! I am All Might! I have come to save you!"
I dropped the spear.
"Wow, it's such an honor to meet you, All Might!"
"How brave of you to fight off a villain while not being a hero! What is your quirk, young lady? It must be strong for you to risk your life!"
I looked down at my feet. There I stood in front of the number one hero, while I was quirkless. I didn't deserve such an honor.
"Actually, I...I'm quirkless..." I mumbled.
"No jokes here, kid! I want to know!" he smiled.
"No...I'm actually quirkless..."
All Might approached me and placed his hand on my shoulder.
"Young lady," he said. "Are you telling me you willingly risked your life...without a quirk...?"
I nodded.
"That is one of the most heroic things I've ever heard..." All Might said.
"Okay, well," I picked up the spear and turned around. "I should get going. It was an honor to-"
"Wait, kid," I turned and All Might stepped closer. "Have you ever thought about being a hero? U.A. is now accepting the quirkless."
"Oh, please. There's no way I could do well without a quirk. Don't be ridiculous, All Might. I appreciate it very much, but..."
All Might looked around, then back down at me.
"Wait a minute...isn't your father Endeavor?"
I nodded.
"And your brother is Shoto Todoroki?"
I nodded again.
"I think there's still hope for you, kid."
Was he crazy?! I mean, his words meant a lot to me, but there was no way I could be a quirkless hero! I would die out there, for sure.
"Thank you All Might, but...I..." I suddenly felt tears brim my eyes and the knot in my throat wouldn't let me finish.
I would have loved to be a hero, but I never really let myself think about it. Of course I wanted to be like my big brother. It would mean the world to me. Fighting by my brother's side, making sure nothing happens to him, always being there for him...
"Well, you should think about it, kid! I shall be on my way!" he dashed off, out of sight, the villain still in his grasp.
"Sam!" Fuyumi ran up to me. "Oh my gosh! Are you alright?! I turned away for a second, then I had no idea where you ran off to!"
"Yeah..." I looked down at the grass.
I turned and dragged the spear back into the shed.
"Sam," Fuyumi placed her hand on my shoulder. "What's wrong? That villain didn't hurt you, did he?"
"No, I..." I looked up at her. "All Might came and saved the day, of course. He was talking to me about being a hero..." I swallowed. "It just really got me thinking..."
"Oh... Well, look, maybe you could-"
"I just need some time to think."Author's note:
