Chapter 2. The Long Hard Night

Chavez's POV: I found a cave and decided use it as a place of refuge I had to carry Chivato on horse back I also had Navajo with us as well I dismounted my horse Spirit and was able to get Chivato inside I laid him down on a blanket he was fading in and out of consciousness he was breathing heavily I felt his forehead he was burning up with a fever so I dug into my saddlebag I still had some of my mother's Navajo medicine I was able to find something to hold the medicine in because in order to take it he has to drink it

Chivato you need to drink this it'll help you please I told him I held his head up so he could drink it

It hurts Chavez Chivato whined

I know Chivato you're going to be alright just try and relax okay easy now bud I told him in a soothing tone of voice

I was able to get Chivato to drink the medicine once he did he started to relax so I was able to get the bullet out of him afterwards I covered him up with blankets and sat by his side we had a little bit food I had some stored in my saddlebag I had couple crackers and some jerky it wasn't much but it at least kept us alive when I walked back into the cave Navajo was curled up next to Chivato who was still awake

What's that Chavez? He asked

Some food I had saved up "you hungry Chivato? I replied

Yeah I'm starving thanks Chavez he replied trying to be his usual self

I smiled softly and we shared the food afterwards it was time to rest but couldn't rest I sat up all night worrying over Chivato's health state and everything else in between I pulled out my picture of my parents and me when I was a baby

I wish you were here mom I whispered to myself

I guess Navajo must've heard me because he curled up next to me whining I guess he knew I was feeling really down and he was trying to cheer me up he was a good pup before we would know it he was going to grow up to be a good dog

I guess you heard me "huh? I said

He looked up at me and rub his head against me I smiled softly and petted him I stayed up for a little while longer then I fell asleep and it was a long hard night I was asleep when suddenly I heard Chivato screaming I woke up alarmingly I looked over there he was screaming and thrashing around I curled up next to him pulling him into my arms comfortably

Chivato shhh it's okay you're alright now you're with me I said rocking him in my arms

Where am'I Chavez? He asked

We were in a cave right now Chivato but you're safe you're with me try and get go back to sleep okay I told him in a soothing tone and holding him tight and gently in my arms

Will you be here when I wake up Chavez? He asked worriedly

Yes I'll be here when you wake up don't worry Chivato I answered

Okay he said before drifting off to sleep

I continued holding him before I drifted off to sleep myself and I was glad he was going to be okay and I wouldn't have it any other way
