Josh closed his eyes tightly as he thought of his last lovers. The first, a girl who tricked him into thinking they were soulmates. Josh didn't think about how her hand was too small to fit his Soulmark or how he never once saw hers himself until after they broke up in the seventh grade.  The second and last, a boy who loved Josh as much as Josh loved him. They broke up after the boy had decided to mentally and verbally abuse Josh, telling him it was his fault they hadn't found their soulmates yet.

He opened his eyes again. The dark brown circles jumped around, watching but avoiding the sight of nearby couples. He had a hard time getting over things, so sometimes small things reminded him of big ones. He walked past a group of second years, sophomores, who were sitting on the floor in a circle to work on a group project. A crunch was heard beneath his foot as he stepped on a paper that had slipped away from them.

"Hey! Light pole!" One of them yelled at Josh.

He flinched. The nickname was something someone would call a tall person like Josh. It reminded him of past pain. "Sorry.." He spoke, his voice slightly shaky.

Before he could know exactly what had happened, his left side was slammed into something. He felt something pop and crack in his hand, causing him to yell out in pain.

Laughter erupted around him before some people realized he was in genuine pain. Josh pulled himself up slightly to face what had happened. One of the sophomores was staring at him in horror, the only one completely realizing the situation. He had grabbed onto Josh's ankle and pulled him down, not knowing he would hit the ground so hard, not realizing their Soulmarks were now touching.

The boy pulled his hand away and stared at Josh's ankle. Josh didn't notice. Adrenaline was rushing through him, melting away some of the pain coming from his left pinky finger. Josh stared at the odd, crooked angle of the finger and the whitish tip poking out near the middle, surrounded by blood.
