Plunge

I hold my breath and go under

ice breaks against my skin

a chill as i open my eyes

a different world beneath the ice

a different kind of reality

a different kind of dread

a different kind of life

and of course

a different dead

a new kind of freezing

races across my spine

it traces against my bones

it wants my heart

it breathes in cold

it flecks my fingers with frostbite

it paints my hands with black

it threatens to suffocate

but yet it never attacks

it makes me swim even farther

but my head starts to spin

the dark creeping up fingers

they almost want to break

the cold, its trying to take

i start to struggle, i start to cry

frozen tear drops dot my eyes

the ice cracks above me

and soon im dragged out

ambulances wail for a frozen body

a shiver and a twitch

with heavy hearts they turn around

with heavy eyes they cry

a single crack, a little slip

i die

a plunge beneath the ice
