While there were only few snowflakes floating down from the heavy, grey clouds minutes ago, the snowing has become more and more intense.
As we were climbing higher and higher in the mountains , I could hear the cracking of the fresh snow under my shoes. Or at least the remaining what once was called shoe. After the heavy use for many years, my shoes deteriorated drastically, and while I could still use them, it felt uncomfortable after the long forced march.
As I turned back I saw my childhood friend Nils. Not as if I had any other friends besides him. Even if we were only 9 years old, we were way more mature than most of the boys in that age.
As I looked at him , panting behind me, he looked back to me , with his dark brown-greyish eyes of his. I saw the sweat pouring down on his reddish cheek from the cold.
"Edward I think we are good. At least for now" he said to me.
" I suppose, I don't hear them anymore" I replied.
I sit down finally after hours of long walking and climbing, even if it felt like ages.
As I rested , I could resist but to think back, to the orphanage we left. It would be more accurate however to say we fled. That's why we were persuaded. After all Nils and I , we were valuable assets...
"Edward, sorry to interrupt you , while you were lost in your thoughts, but we should go now. Sooner we reach the mountain pass, the sooner we will get that "freedom" you were always talking about".
I firmly grabbed the hand he offered to me and we started to climb again, but now he took the lead. The layer of snow covering the rocks and the ground became thicker and thicker as we climbed even higher. Even though dense , grey and dark clouds covered the sky , I imagined the picks of the high mountains surrounding as which layed above the clouds, just as if they were sketching towards the sky. Some of them were couple of thousands meters high.
We walked and climbed for an hour or so , when we finally saw it.
"The pass..." I said. The words left my mouth involuntarily as soon as I saw it.
" Indeed, now let's hurry before it gets dark. Even with our fire manipulation we would freeze to death up here..."
I nod at him. I couldn't say that he wasn't right.
We finally reached the pass. As we crossed it , an idea formed inside my mind. I stopped. Nils stopped too as soon he look behind his back.
"Nils, I had an idea... What if we...", I looked at the pass , and the rocks which constituted the pass. They were rather unstable. " What if we would collapse those rocks? We could block the pass and therefore slow down our pursuers".
"Not a bad idea" replied Nils, but I saw the shadow of worry on his face." But what if we will have a hard time on the other side of the mountains? We always could return to the orphanage and ...."
"Are you out of your mind?" I shrieked. I felt my anger surging from down below, but I calmed myself. " What do you think? They will welcome us with open arms? They will for sure separate us and put us in a stupid cell to mediate about our actions".
I saw a hint of guilty on my friend's face for saying such thing. He knew it too, that we couldn't go back.
I let out a frail smile: " Now come on. Help me, we have no time as you said it earlier." With our earth magic capabilities we blocked the pass soon enough then we continued our way, now descending from the mountains. We marched again, for couples of hours, and the sun was close to setting down , when Nils turned towards me:
" I have feeling we are being watched," he said.
I knew he was the type of guy who worried sometimes a lot,.so I thought he was too cautious.
" You always had a weird imagination. Do you really think that the Yeti is here somewhere?" I chuckled while speaking.
His lips curve up a bit , but he soon put on a serious face. " Funny , funny..."
We continued our way down for couple of minutes when suddenly I heard a loud groan. It was a bear. Or was it? As it approached, I could clearly see it was some sort of monster resembling to a bear. I wanted to run but I couldn't , as if my legs were frozen to the ground.
"Edward , come on" yelled Nils.
It was however too late. The bear alike creature started to run towards me , closing the gap between us really fast. I almost felt his teeth in my flesh, when I lost consciousness and the word became dark around me...

Dear Reader!Thank you for reading my very first chapter of my story. I never really wrote anything, especially in english, so forgive me. I really hope this first chapter which served as an introduction, or some sort , picked your interest. Maybe you are wondering I didnt really explain anything... But this is intended. You will find an answer for your question in the next chapters where I will reveal not only more about the past of these two boys but also I will explain the working of this world.
Ps: Ugh, I have a trouble finding the title... While I did give a title to my "work" (If I can even call that a work), and it can be later associated to the story, I don't think it is really the best name I can find. So maybe later I will change the title.
