Ivory hated having to watch in silence as her new professor clanged away on the scrap of metal he claimed to be revolutionary. She knew she would be forced to be the test subject when it was ready for human testing.
Brushing her black hair from her face she turned her back towards the professor, his gaze burning her back whenever he glared her way.
She had grown used to the loud noises around her when she was younger and more hopeful that she would be shown a bit of affection.
This hope had died quickly.
The new longing of freedom had grabbed her with its claws and refused to release her, resulting in the cage where she now lived.
She hated everything to do with the lab and its people, but never retaliated to the cruel actions. She was safer here than the outside.
Ivory recoiled as the professor approached.
It's done..
She was never told the professor's name and preferred not to adress him with one.
He didn't DESERVE a name in her opinion."Get over here and let me test it!" He snarled and made a grab for her, only to miss as she stood up to follow.
She trudged after the professor as he went to punch in number and turn dials, reluctant to ask the machine's purpose.
The professor stood up fully to tower over Ivory as she inspected it's gleaming silver surface, "Don't touch anything!" He snapped.
"But what is it..?"
"That's why you're here! Go grab the mouse from that cage over there" he ordered, pointed one of his fingers to a small cage on the table nearby.
Ivory nodded and approached the table to look at the small white mouse in the cage.
It squeaked helplessly as she lifted it from the cage and a stab of pity pierced her as she watched the creature flail around trying to escape.
Ivory desperately wanted to free the mouse so it wouldn't suffer something it didn't deserve but, pushed forward toward a box the professor has set for the mouse.
Setting the squeaking mouse down in it's new prison, she retreated behind the professor as he began tuning the machine toward the cardboard box.
"If this works people will be able to turn common mammals into helping hands! No more pests or need for futile traps!" He said with triumph at his own genius.
Ivory rolled her eyes from behind his back to avoid getting punished as he switched the machine on.
The engine roared to life as steam and gears began to move and power the invention. Electricity crackled and flashed as the gears and cogs spun faster and faster than Ivory thought was necessary.
The professor seemed to take no notice as he pressed a button on the board covered in circuits and pipes.
Ivory closed her eyes, bracing to hear the mouse screech from the beam of power that was charging up....
But it never happened.
Ivory peaked her brown eyes open to look toward the professor as he began looking for the source of the machine's failure.
She caught a faint smell of something foul and knew it was too late when a spark flew from the machine, causing it to explode.
Ivory only caught a glimpse of the professor and herself being thrown back into the wall before darkness engulfed her.
