It was nighttime and now summer, as Max slipped outside. Their birthday was soon, and they were excited for it because their favourite auntie was coming. Her name was Elizabeth. She always told them stories of magical places and magical people. One particular story they liked was the story about the Rabbit Queen. The story also had a short rhyme it came from, which you would sing out to summon the queen. Or at least, that's what the story said.

"The poor girl, of but fourteen. Destined to become a rabbit queen. Severed ears stitched with pride, glowing tears in glowing eyes. Come forth now please your majesty, help us now and hear our plea."

The story of the Rabbit Queen was one of their most read books in the cubby hole of the grand oak tree. They were going there yet again, to retrieve the book. They stumbled over roots and fallen branches before coming across the oak tree. It seemed more welcoming in the dark, as fireflies flitted around it. It felt magical, almost. They climbed into the cubby hole, looking for the book. Nothing. The book was gone, and one of the stacks was toppled over. Max climbed out, worried. They ran around the oak tree and came across a set of tracks.

After following the tracks for what seemed like forever, Max stopped at a river where the tracks seemed to stop as well. There, on a rock in the middle of the river, was the book. They reached over as far as they could, a strong current splashing them with cold water. The book was on a very big rock so it didn't get splashed. Max saw a tree with long branches very close to the rock, and climbed all the way out. Just as they grabbed the book, the branch snapped. They wrapped the book in a hug, preparing for cold water.

Instead of freezing water, they felt big soft hands catch them. They opened their eyes to see who it might be. It was a girl, of around 16, with giant bunny ears and soft green eyes. She whispered softly to them, "Why are you in the forest at dark? It's not safe." Max felt sleepy listening to her voice, and deciding to trust the girl, they fell asleep.
