The four teens ran through a train tunnel, trying not to fall in the shadowy light. The ground was rough, uneven, littered with stones and rubbish, and they had to keep looking down to avoid tripping over the rusted train tracks. Kymara spied a nook in the wall, a recess where all four could rest for a moment, catch their breath. They all shuffled in and stood close together, crammed into the small space, their chests heaving and their voices hoarse. As Jacob started to lean backwards to see out of the tunnel they were all struck by a sudden ear-splitting squeal as a freight train barrelled down the line. Jacob threw himself against the others and, along with Rose and Kymara, Blocked his ears and shut his eyes. Gemma, terrified and exhausted, screamed, her eyes wide open, but the sound of her fear was drowned out by the roar of the train's engine.
