Once upon a time, there lived a girl. Many years ago her life had dramatically changed. She lived with a kind old man who she called Poppa. They adored each other. Her family disappeared right after they had left her in an old man's care. For they knew what was to happen to them and did not want it to happen to their green-eyed baby who was so precious to them they did not want her to have the same fate that had came for them.
As they left, she could hear of her family crying. The old Mayor Conner did know at the time that one of her blood was out in the open. That was 15 years ago.
"What you up to Poppa," I said
"I need to tell you something." The old man said with a slight whisper that only I could hear.
"Why are you whispering."
"Because I have tell you a secret that only you can hear," he said even quieter than last time.
"Okay, what is it."
"Come sit here. I'm not actually your grandpa. I'm not even related to you."
"What!?" I shouted not even knowing I spoke out loud.
"You must keep your voice down or they will know who you are actually related to. Your parents went missing when you were 3." His whisper was so quiet that not even someone 2 feet away could have overheard.
"What so..." I yelled.
"Shh. Keep quiet when you talk about this to me and do not breathe a word to anyone. I mean this now when I say it," he said with a gentle voice that told me never to talk to anyone about it.
"Now get ready for bed, you live under my roof so you go to bed when I say so," he said in a demanding and sweet voice that almost scared me every time he used it. So I listened and went to my room. I was wondering if I could find my family maybe. I could get clues of who they are or where they used to live.
Later that night about 12:30 I decided to sneak out of the house. I was whispering to myself, "I must find my family" as I was sneaking out of my window. Just then the old man came to check on me to see if I was asleep. He looked out the window.
"I know that you want to know where your family is" he spoke as I climbed down from the window with a shameful face to meet him at the door. Normally the old man would be very upset and I wouldn't see him smile for quite some time. Weirdly the old man smiled at me with happiness in his eyes.
"Poppa how come you are smiling at me? Normally when I sneak out of the house and you find me you don't have a smile on your face, why is it now that you do," I said with my wavering voice. He motioned me to come and sit on the couch with him.
"I need to tell you something that I have never told anyone in my lifetime."
"What is it Poppa you can tell me anything?" I asked
"I too have never seen my family. Ever since I was 10, which was 40 years ago. I have tried to find them but I lost hope in finding them because I have never had the guts to go anywhere close to where that man lives or works. Please don't ask me to tell you who. You can't tell anyone about this talk we had here." the old man said.
"Maybe you could help me find my family and then we might be able to find your family."
"Fine. I will help you if only you will go to bed shortly and not try to sneak out of the house. You do not need to call me Poppa, your family would not like it if you called me poppa. So call me Bob. Runoff to bed now"
"Good night Pop..... Bob. Good night um Bob."
"Good night Grace," he said as he smiled which put butterflies in my stomach and made me want to make me fly with happiness. So I did what I was told with a happy heart to go to bed.
Ring Ring. I heard and I made my way down the stairs expecting to see the sun gazing through the door instead I saw the moon. The door swung open and at the door was my family or what I could remember of them. They entered the room and just as they were going to speak to me a man in a red suit snatched them away. I woke up with tears in my eyes as the old man came into my room. "What is wrong," asked Bob.
"My family. I saw them in a dream at least what I could remember of them. It was scary just as they were going to tell me who had kidnapped them a man in a red suit with his face in the shadow of a black hat took them. All I saw of him was that he was muscular and that of course he was a man" I said crying.
" do not be afraid for I know who has hidden your family," Bob said making sure no one could hear but me. "Who," I asked loudly.
" the mayor" he whispered urging me to be silent
"Who made him mayor then if he has done these horrible things," I asked urging for the truth. He somehow covered up their disappearance, for my family's disappearance it was the mayor's dad that had taken my family back in 1977. Old mayor Connors said that they had gone to jail and he was going to send me to the orphanage. I ran away before he could send someone to take me away. "I changed my name to Bob so he would never know who I was," he said with anger in his eyes. "Thanks for that information, why did I need to know this." I slightly yelled.
"Shh no one is awake yet in the town but I would be careful what you say in front of the mayor. If he knows that we are alive he will do everything in his power to find us." Bob said.
"Why would do such a thing he's so fun and handsome," I said with a smile.
