Spencer's POV
There was something about this woman that pulled me in. The way she went from apologising to me rapidly to sitting on the floor checking on a very old looking cat that she was holding. It was amusing to watch how carefully and thoroughly she was checking the cat over. I also love his name, Schrodinger is just the best. The reasoning behind it is even better. She seemed so sweet and caring and the fact that she was the one to name him and owned her own shelter and vet clinic was amazing now that I know she's only 22.
I don't know why I came here today. There was just something that made me want to check up on Schrödinger. There was something about how she acted last night. The love and worry in her eyes all for a very old looking cat that most people would look over and ignore. Her dog Donna was old two, last night she said she needed to go and give her medication and she looked old too. I know a lot of people would put the animal down thinking it was the best thing to do even though with the right medication they could live for many years, it's just the cost that puts them off.
"The size of your office says a lot about you by the way. A lot of people would have wanted a much larger room." I said looking around the small room. It wasn't just the size but the bareness of the walls. There weren't any photos on the walls, the only personal touches were for her pets. The only thing I have seen that links her to her past other than her dog is a bracelet.
"I get that a lot. Mainly by everyone that works or volunteers here. My past isn't that great and I'd rather forget it all, well most of it." She paused for a second and fiddled with the bracelet on her wrist. "And I wanted to make sure that all the larger rooms were for the surgical rooms so there was room to move around with ease. I also wanted to make sure that the consultation rooms were roomy the last thing owners want while at the vet is to be sat in a cramped room with an ill pet as they might be freaked out by it and possibly panic causing more health complications. This is the smallest room in the building, just enough room for me and these old guys. None of us is fond of moving around a lot, we all have bad joints." She joked. Just then there was a ping on her computer causing her to turn around and sigh.
"Sorry, email. I need to read it, it has IMPORTANT, in the subject." She said with a small smile. She turned back around and started to read the email. I watched her facial expressions as she read. It wasn't a long email but the expressions she was making it wasn't a good one.
"What wrong?" As I asked Donna put her head on my lap and demanded me to pet her.
"A Box with three really young puppies was just brought in by a good samaritan and there are no free vets available. So muggins here is gonna have to fill in and check them over." As she said this she stood up putting Schrodinger back on her chair and patting her head.
"Oh, I guess I'd better get going." I stood up making Donna growl at me slightly. I chuckled and patted her head while shaking my head a little.
"You could join me if you want. It's been a while since I've had to use my vet skills and an extra pair of hands would be very appreciated, especially since they are puppies." She replied with a slight laugh as she took the white coat off the back of the door. When she put it on I noticed that it had Dr Carter embroidered in purple thread on the pocket. She then opened up the top draw in her desk she pulled out a lilac stethoscope, she put it around her neck and then smiled at me.
"If you're okay with it," I answered by scratching the back of my neck.
"Of course I am, I wouldn't have offered if I wasn't. Like I said I could use the extra hands." She laughed as she opened the door. She seemed calm but I could tell all she wanted to do was get to the puppies.
When we got to the receptionist I stood back and watched her talk and interact with the puppies that were in the box. She looked so caring and it was easy to see that all she really wanted to do was take the puppies into her arms and never let go. The way she was cooing at them while taking in all that was being said to her was just adorable.
That's when her face changed from admiration to horror. That was when I knew something horrific happened to the puppies.
