By the time Saturday had rolled around I hadn't seen Alex once since playing hooky. I pushed my too-long bangs out of my face and stuffed them behind my ear, it kind of bothered me that she hadn't even tried to talk to me but I figured she'd be better off not hanging out with a weirdo like myself. I was currently sipping a caramel crunch frappuccino on my break in a sitting place in the middle of the mall. Every weekend I worked at a Starbucks-wannabe coffee shop called Linda's in the mall and I was now on my break. Sergio also works in the mall but his break starts 10 minutes after mine does; so there I sat thinking about an unattainably attractive bad ass and waiting for my dumb best friend.
"Melly guess who got you a pretzel from the food court?" A familiar voice called to me.
"Our lord and savior Jesus Christ?" I guessed and looked up at Sergio.
"Ah yes praise Jesus!" He exclaimed in fake enthusiasm and slid the packed pretzel toward me.
"Thank you, Jesus." I laughed and dug into the delicious snack food.
"Geez you Germans and your pretzels." He muttered before drinking the rest of my frappuccino.
"Dude I'm barely German get your facts straight." Talking with your mouth full is always the way to go if you want to gross out a stranger; although Sergio is no stranger to my 'unladylike' eating habits. I do what I want, I'm punk rock.
"You are a true gem my dear Melody." He laughed at my childish behavior.
"Thanks, I know." I flipped my hair over my shoulder dramatically and continued devouring my pretzel.
"Isn't your break over like now?" Sergio asked nonchalantly, already knowing the answer to his question.
"Fuck me gently with a chainsaw." I got up and ran over to my workplace.
I slid through the kitchen door and grabbed my apron off its hanger, logged into the cash register, and was then ready to take on annoying customers.
About an hour into the second half of my shift I was busily fixing drinks and taking orders as fast as I could. Filling out the last customer's information on the clear iced coffee cup, I greeted the next customer with the usual, "Hello welcome to Linda's, how can I help you?"
"I'll take your number and a plain black coffee." A strangely familiar voice requested. I looked up in shock, not used to random people wanting my number when I came face to face with none other than Alex York.
"I-uh small, medium, or large?"
"I'll take a medium." She smirked.
I wrote her name on the cup and marked off what she wanted. Still flushed I turned to the next customer and got their order together. My co-worker Molly took over the cash register so I could make the 3 orders. I made the later customer's order first, then the customer before Alex and then poured Alex her drink.
"Medium black coffee!" I called out.
"Thanks kitten," she smirked.
"When does your shift end?"
I glanced at the clock, and saw I had 15 minutes left, I told her this, she nodded and sat down. Not sure what to do next, I went ahead and swapped places with Molly and continued working until the end of my shift.
"See you tomorrow Melody." Molly called, I smiled and politely nodded, exiting the kitchen to meet Alex and Sergio considering his shift at f.y.e. ended 15 minutes before mine. I walked out and saw Sergio and Alex sitting at the same table Sergio and I sat at during our breaks, talking about god-knows-what. Sergio's shit-eating grin and Alex's smirk have me a bad feeling though.
