"The first day of school is always the best!" My twin brother said, excitement lighting up his voice as he spoke. "It's the time of getting new classes, joining new clubs, and best of all, making new friends."I strongly disagreed with my brother.
To me, the first day to a new school was the day of embarrassment beyond definition, and naturally, loneliness.
I couldn't believe a pair of twins could have such opposing personalities.
We sat together in the kitchen of our new home. Our parents would normally eat with us, but both my brother and I knew moments we'd previously shared, like breakfasts, with our parents would quickly dissipate as their schedules no longer allowed for them.
They were already at work.
It was Monday morning and my brother seemed excited while I dreaded school starting in a half hour.
To make matters worse, my head throbbed in pain, as it did each time I had my recurring dream.
"I've heard great things about the school," my brother told me. "I've been browsing their website online."
"I was browsing the internet as well." I informed my excited brother. "The school has a bad bullying reputation and is practically infamous for it."
Although I told my brother these things he'd never be put down.
"We'll be fine," he said. "If anyone bullies you, just tell me."
My twin brother had always been protective. He says it's just part of being a big brother.
"What if someone bullies you?" I asked back.
"They wouldn't," he responded confidently.
Honk, honk
A horn honked two times fast from our U-shaped driveway.
It was deep and surprisingly loud.
Who was honking in our driveway?
"Oops, seven thirty!" My brother rushed looking at his watch.
"Where are you going?" I asked him while he ran out the door.
"I got a ride to school from some friends I made on Insta. Bye." He said not even breaking his step to exit our home. "See ya in Miss Macy's office."
That was just like my brother. Making friends from the school before he even went to the school! It had to have been his gift.
If ever I ask him how he did it, and trust me I have lots of times, he'll say with a grin, "it comes with being the older child."
My brother often teased about the one minute between the two of us.
One minute older, that's it. It's not like he's an elder.
It's going to be rough not having him around on the first day, I thought. As annoying as his teasing might be we're twins, so I kinda depend on him.
I better get going as well, I told myself. Just get this over with.
Heading out the door I grabbed my backpack filled with textbooks and a Mac book computer and headed out the door.
I didn't know I hated being alone. I had almost forgotten what it was like.
In Serbia I always walked to school with my best friend Karen.
Now, I was not only walking alone, but I was in a foreign land.
I pulled out my Telemax using Google Maps to find the way to school.
