We arrive at the house at 3:36 and I know I’m going to hear it. I’ve been late for everything all day. Let’s just hope when I go to meet Sergeant later tonight I’m not late. He is definitely old and needs to retire. His son, Ivan, is more than capable of taking control of the DHA. Ivan has been hiding in his shadow and learning how to run the DHA for the past eight years.

I’ve known Ivan for as long as I can remember. He’s one of my best friends. He probably would be my best friend if he lived on earth or if I lived in Careford. Like all else though my mom wanted me to grow upon earth.  It was either Earth or my dad’s home dimension. Either way, I would’ve never grown up in Careford.

“LANDYN GRYGH MARTINS,” I hear my mom yell as I step out of the car, “Get your ass in here. NOW!”

I sigh and lock the car dreading heading into the house. I know exactly what’s going to happen. It’s nothing new that I haven’t been through. Mom seems to get the angriest out of my parents when I’m late. But that seems typical with what I am. I just don’t understand why she’s not as strict with Layana. She’s a DC just like me but she can be late without trouble.

Once I enter the house I see the look from my mom. It’s the look of anger but relief. That look I’ve been seeing for the past eight years. For the past eight years, every time I’m late she freaks. She runs up and hugs me.

“Never be late,” she demands, “I’d think you would learn after eight years but you haven’t. The IES is still out there looking for people like us. We will be in trouble if they do. I’ve been in the IES they have increased the amount of technology in use. They are above what we have in the DHA. I don’t think we will be able to get you out.”

“Wait, what do you mean?” I question. There’s no way the IES has higher technology than us. We literally have multiple different dimensions on my side. “We have multiple universes providing technology for us. Not to mention that some of them are years in advance.”

She sighs and pulls me aside. As Layton runs into the house and Ranger, her german shepherd, runs after her. “Landyn, you don’t know everything about the IES,’’ she whispers cautiously, “There are people in there that are DCs or shifters. Sometimes both. Well, the thing is….”

“Wait, so people like Devin,” I interrupted before she can continue.

“Yes, people like Devin,” she answers and looks at the clock. The time read 3:55. I have five minutes until the party starts and three hours until I need to go meet Sergeant. “Now let me continue. The thing about it is. Those DCs and shifters bring technology from other planets to the IES. If it wasn’t for those people the IES would be far behind, but that isn’t working anymore. The DHA needs to increase the amount of knowledge they have on the IES so they have been sending DCs into the IES to gain it. The DHA is taking more risks than they have in the past. But the rest of what you need to know will be told to you later on.”

She walks away and I stand there shocked. The DHA is willingly sending DCs into the IES in order to get information from them. They are willingly sending agents in danger in order for them to no little things. Not to mention other DCs are going in there of their own free will to work there. I’m not so sure that I want to go into the DHA’s field work anymore. If only I’d known this sooner I would’ve never signed up for this.

Sure I love danger and excitement. It’s the whole reason I signed up to join the DHA in their fieldwork. The thrill of going to different universes and meeting its people and helping. Just helping the people of these worlds is what I’ve wanted to do. That’s what I’ve always thought they’ve done. It’s the whole reason they’re called Dimensional Help Agency.
