One and a Half Years Ago

"Peter! Wake up!" I hear May call.

"Nooooooooooo," I say. 5:30 was too early.

"Come on, new school today! No more Erin and Katie and Paige," May sang. I sat up, rubbing my eyes.

"Fine," I say. I stagger to my dresser, pulling out a pair of baggy pants, a plain grey t-shirt, and a hoodie. I snatch my binder from where I'd thrown it last night.

Oh yeah! I got a binder pretty soon after I'd come out to May. Also cut my hair so I looked more like a boy. I then had to kinda come out to my grade as well, telling them I was going to be called Peter, he/him pronouns. It didn't really go over that well.

The teachers were alright at the whole Peter thing, though Erin, Katie, and Paige? They were ruthless. They missed no opportunities to remind me that my dead name was Alexis, that I wasn't really a boy, that I was crazy and should go kill myself.

I finally told May at the end of the school year, it had become harder and harder to hide the bruises from the girls beating me up, and we agreed that I should switch schools. That way I had a blank slate, and I could start all over as Peter Parker.

---

Of course, it couldn't be that simple, could it. I was late for one of my classes, just one, and before I could tell the teacher I was called Peter, boom. There it went.

"Alexis?" The teacher called for role.

I stood mortified in the doorway. I couldn't very well speak up now, then everyone would know. Please, dear God, please let everyone ignore me, I thought as I walked to the closest seat and sat down.

"Alexis," the teacher called again, more annoyed this time, "I suppose she's not here."

The teacher, Mr. Keller, finished calling role and then noticed me.

"What's your name, I don't think you're on my list," Mr. Keller said, frowning down at his attendance list.

"My name is Peter?" I say uncertainty, knowing full well that there wasn't going to be a Peter on the list.

"Hmmm, I don't have a Peter, what about a last name?" Great.

"Parker," I say, quietly this time.

"Alexis?" Mr. Keller asks, and I sink down in my chair.

"I go by Peter," I grumble. There was a shifting in the room and I knew everyone was going to know now. They'll know me as the new trans kid and that's all.

---

Lunch was torturous. This one guy, Flash (I know right. Stupid name), apparently found out about my dead name.

"AAAALEEXIIIIIIIIISSS," came a call from one of the lunch tables. I just walked by, ignoring them. They stood up and started walking after me.

"Hey, Alexis, Lexi, now tell me. If you're into girls does that make you a faggot and a tr*nny?" This other kid asked me, standing in front of me, and I just pushed him out of the way.

"Oi, Alli, are you just a tr*nny because you want the attention? Or are you really that mentally ill," the Flash dude asked, then he poked me. You know, where my binder covers.

"Get the fuck out of my way," I growl, pushing through their group and into the hallway to eat my lunch in peace.

"Ignore them," came a voice from next to me. Someone sat down to my right and I looked over, "they're losers."

It was this girl, ridiculously pretty girl might I add, with cute curly brown hair pulled back.

"Hi, I'm Peter," I said, then extended my hand.

"MJ," she replied, not shaking my hand. I take it back. She takes out a sketchbook and starts drawing, and I just pick at my lunch. So far this day hasn't been the best.
