Chapter 4
Paige awoke to the sound of clanging metal. Hesitantly opening her eyes, she saw steam rising from the floor, a slightly more dented teapot lying on its side in a puddle of water, and a flustered Billie, mopping the spill with a dusty sheet.
"Oh, Paige, I didn't mean to wake you. I was trying to be quiet actually, maybe make us some tea, but the handle got really hot and-" Billie rambled on uncharacteristically.
"Dude, being flustered is my thing. Here, let me help you clean up." Paige hurried to the kitchen. Her foot hit the water, and before she knew it, she hit the floor with an echoing thud.
Billie laughed. "Thanks for the help, but I really don't think your butt will clean up much of this water."
"Haha, thanks, I'm fine by the way." Paige tried to say with a straight face. "As much as I'm enjoying playing safe house with you, shouldn't we get back to saving all of existence or something like that?"
Billie sighed. "Yeah, I was thinking the same thing." Standing, Billie helped Paige up off the floor. "Are you sure you're ready?"
Paige rolled her eyes. "Me? I was born ready. Bring on the adventure, the excitement, the epic quest!"
"Are you forgetting the danger, the being erased, not to mention The Curator of The Athenaeum?" Billie uttered, rubbing her temples with her thumbs.
"First of all, aside from all the death, this is fun. Second, you said everything would be fine if I trusted you, and I do. Trust you that is. Oh, and lastly, you said this Athena place was just a fancy library. Were librarians, well, sort of. So we've got this." Paige said in a rush.
"Ok, it's called The Protector's Athenaeum." Billie enunciated. "The Curator isn't exactly the easiest person to work with. Also, you did forget something. We have each other." She grabbed Paige's hand and led her to the front door of the cabin. Taking the key out of her pocket, she brushed off some pocket lint and gently stuck the key into the lock.
Turning to Paige, she whispered. "Ready?" Paige nodded.
As Billie turned the key, it shone with a soft blue light. Brilliant white light flooded the cabin as she opened the door. Stepping forward, Billie disappeared into the light. Just her hand remained, grasping tightly to Paige's.
Ok, Paige thought. I can do this. Just step into the light. No problem. With a deep breath, she leaped forward into the light.
