Most romance books begin with a pleasant opening scene. So, if you think this is any random book then you are horribly mistaken. This is a romantic action novel. This book starts with the words... "Wait for my signal then follow me." I watched in suspenseful horror as my mother crawled out from our cover to what she thought was safety.
She was barely halfway there when a huge explosion went off, throwing everything into total chaos. I was thrown off balance and went crashing into a wall. I wasn't sure if I was conscious or not. There were several figures moving back and forth. They finally left carrying something awkwardly inbetween them.
An excruciating flicker of pain shot through me and I lost conscience. I had finally regained consciousness. Even though I hadn't opened my eyes but I could tell that I wasn't in a friendly place. My face was on a cold hard surface which I figured was a table. I opened my eyes and quietly took in my surroundings. I was in a typical interrogation room. I raised my head and made to rub my eyes, but they were cuffed to a large table in front of me. There was a bulky man in a cheap suit sitting across me with a puzzled expression on his face. He took my fingerprints and left. He returned several minutes later. He threw himself back on the chair and slid the handcuff keys to me. I smiled an slid the keys back to him with along with the handcuffs which I had removed immediately after the detective left. The detectives facial expression changed faster than a traffic light to anger. He began to rant about Special Ops. agents and how they feel like they are above the law. I couldn't stop the smug grin from forming on my face.
Finally, I was allowed to leave. I stood in front of the precinct collecting my thoughts, when a youngish man turned the corner sprinting towards me, clutching a designer handbag that was obviously not his. He neared me. I struck twice. One to his throat and one to is diaphragm. The thief crumpled almost immediately and hit the ground with a dull thud.
Shortly after, a woman in her sixties turned the corner flanked by a burly looking man in a combat outfit and an attractive girl. They gathered around the hyperventilating thief. He looked at me desperate for my help. I smiled back at him and turned my attention to the beautiful girl standing before me. For what seemed like ten seconds, I stared at the girl. I was pulled out of my paradise when her slightly less attractive mother tapped me on the shoulder. She was rumbling on and on and on in a thick Russian accent. I forced myself to fully divert my attention to her but I jut couldn't.
She finally managed to catch my attention when she pulled out a fat envelope and handed it to me. I thanked her and walked away with my pockets a kilogram heavier than before. I took a cab to the warehouse and found my car. I drove back to HQ in low spirits.
I arrived at HQ half an hour later and almost every agent in the building was staring at me awkwardly. "Shit." I muttered under my breath. They already knew that my mother had been taken. I stormed into my bosses office and sat opposite him breathing heavily. He barely made an effort to look up from his work. I cleared my throat several times before he lackadaisically raised his head to look at me."Agent Black. I have been expecting you." I looked at him and said the most polite thing that came to my tongue. "So?." For a split second, he looked taken aback but he quickly comported himself and his expression left as quickly as it came. We discussed calling her KIA but I disagreed. He told me he would send me backup for a mission to find and rescue her if need arose.
I stormed out of his office and went into mine down the long air conditioned hallway. I sat at my large cluttered desk collecting my thoughts when mission distribution sent me an emergency meeting alert. I sighed deeply and went to the conference room.
Everyone was already seated by the time I got there. I took my seat beside my boss and we began. The head of wanted persons began with a PowerPoint on the one of the high ranking blacklisted people that had been sighted. It was the woman whose bag I had saved earlier on. Apparently, her name was Ivanka Vladkins and she was a huge drug lord. Apparently her husband had disappeared suddenly, leaving her to manage the business, which she was doing quite well. Fortunately or unfortunately for me I was the one supposed to take care of that mission with the backup that had been promised to me. I wondered who it was but I decided to shut up. Apparently the files had been sent to me for self briefing and it had also been sent to my mystery partner. I read over them briefly in my office before calling it a day and heading home. On my way I decided to stop by a cafe to buy a sandwich. When I was ready to leave I noticed the girl that was with the Russian woman earlier sitting by herself with a coffee. I made my move.
"It's you" I sat opposite her and smiled. She gazed at me with her electric blue eyes. "Khelanie". She replied. "Samuel" I responded . We spoke for about an hour and a half before she was ready to leave. I arrived at my humble 15 en suite bedroom mansion and was shocked to find a car out of the garage. I usually kept my cars in the garage. It took me several moments to realize that it wasn't any of my cars. Then with deep sorrow, I realized that it must have belonged to the agent who was supposed to be my legal guardian till further notice. I stood in front of the front door for a good ten minutes before reaching out and walking through into the wide corridor lined with like a dozen doors and basked in warm golden light with the grand staircase at the furthest end.
