I step through the portal and arrive in Glimmerbrook. I step aside as others come through. There are seven of us travelling to the mundane world. I make sure that everyone is accounted for as the portal shuts closed behind us.
Simeon gives a panicked look, and turns to rush back through the portal.. He stops himself as almost runs off the dais and into the falls. He turns around and pounds on the now cold stone archway, trying to hold back tears. I walk up to him and give him a half-hug in comfort. He looks up at me pleadingly.
"I know, I'm worried too, but we knew this was going to be a one way trip, and none of us are strong enough to teleport back."
Morgan looks thoughtful for a moment. "You know, if we pool our power, we could probably open the portal again..."
I look at Morgan. "As tempting as that is right now, we were told to give it a week. Then someone would come for us. We just need to be patient. Our parents sent us here for our protection, we have no idea what we would be walking into right now."
Tensions have been getting really high across the Realm lately. I don't know the whole story, but it all boils down to someone said something wrong to someone else. There was  duel and the offended party sorely lost. The bitterness of that fight has caused a rift in the houses as people are taking sides in the argument. Debate has devolved into shouting, and my parents were worried that it was going to boil down to all out conflict.
As means to protect the Realm's potential, one child was chosen from each house. We are to stay in the Mundane world with a small collection of magical items and artifacts to protect us from the escalating conflict. It is my mother's hope that, together we can keep the houses united in friendship, away from what's going on back home. Once it was safe, we would reunited with our families.
I look up at the archway thoughtfully. I wonder how long that will take?

I sigh and turn to face the others. Somehow, as the student with the most potential from our class, I've been voted the leader of our small group.  I pull the scrolls out of my satchel.
"Okay, so we've all been assigned places to stay in the mundane world." I start handing out the scrolls to each of my friends.
"Some of you have the resources to live on your own." I look at the next scroll making sure I'm handing the right one to Simeon. "Some of you have been joined with families for further support, you may even recognize the family you will be paired with. These are friends and relatives, people the Masters trust to keep us safe."
I hand the last one to Morgan. "These assignments are not set in stone. If you rather group up as roommates, you are welcome to. The only thing I ask is that we all keep in touch, we don't know when the summons will arrive. If we are lucky we'll be here for a month at most."
Morgan nods to me. "You each have your glimmerstone, it will allow short-range teleport back here, to the portal. Once we're summoned, it will make for quick travel to come back. It will also act as a means to send each other messages, so we don't waste magic on sending spells."
I look at them a sigh. "I'll be staying here in Glimmerbrook as the first point of contact. I'll keep in touch with each of you weekly."
They all nod to me. "Now, it's important that you use as little magic here as possible. On this world, your powers will take longer to recharge, and the mundanes are afraid of the strange and unusual. Don't make yourselves a target by showing off. The Masters want us to 'blend in' as much as possible so that we don't draw unwanted attention to ourselves. We were brought her to be safe."

We all hug and say our goodbyes as we split ways. I gather up my courage, and my things, and head up the path. By my scrolls directions, the house isn't far, it's just as easy to walk the distance to get there.

The house is small, simple, and comfortable. I smile and look around. My uncle said it should have almost all the comforts of home. I look around the living room area, there is a couch, a small square box on the table by the wall, and a writing desk. The kitchen is simple. Fridge, stove, enough storage for a single person, and a cauldron in one corner. Well, at least I won't go without being able to make potions, but it may be difficult explaining to others why I have a large pot sitting in my kitchen. I laugh to myself. I think I'll tell them I really like soup...
A small hallway connects the kitchen and living room to the back of the house, where there's a small simple bathroom and bedroom. The double bed looks comfortable enough, and there's enough closet space for my things. I may even use the dresser on the far wall.
The house is small and cozy, and not really built to have company over outside of our small circle.. Oh well, guess I'll just have to be adventurous and meet friends outside of the house.
