Ellie's POV

"Happy Birthday honey, you're officially 7! I can't wait to see you grow into a handsome man like your father."

I see a man holding a cupcake and smiling, "Blow out your candles son, and make your wish!"

I think for a moment and smile brightly before saying, "I hope to have a soulmate relationship like yours and mommy's! Full of happiness and adventure! I wanna grow old together with them just like you guys will!"

All of a sudden I was outside. It was gloomy and rainy and I was staring at the casket of the woman that was at the birthday party.

Everyone is huddled around each other. I try to grab onto the man from the party's hand but he slapped it away, instead grabbing a flask from his coat pocket and taking a swig.

He grabbed my shoulder tightly and pushed me towards the car. I start crying once we get inside. "SHUT UP! YOU AREN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO LOST HER!", he hollered. Then man that looked so nice before slapped me.

I leaned my stinging cheek against the cold window and whispered, "Mama why did you have to leave me."

I shoot up and I feel something wet on my face. I reach up and feel the hot tears streaming down my cheeks. I need to get some fresh air. It's cold outside, right? Yeah I think so.

I grab my jacket and go out the front door. I need to escape this cell, this prison, this hell hole. I rush to the park across the street and sit down on the bench.

This place has so many memories for me and my family before my dad left. I see someone walking towards me, so I stay quiet hoping that they don't try and sell me drugs. But instead of seeing me like a normal person, he thinks I'm a part of the bench and sits on me.

He hops up quite embarrassed, and I can't even get out a sentence. "I-uh-um," I stammer. Then I realize how stupid I sound and burst out laughing.

I guess he thought I was laughing at him cause he said, "Oh come on, don't be mean." He looks like a grinning idiot so I smile back. An actual, real life smile. It's been a long time since I have done that. What has this random boy that sits on people's laps done to me.

"What are you doing out this late", I ask laughing for no reason. He looks like he's trying to read me as he crosses his arms over his chest.

"Why should I tell you? You could be a serial
killer! Or even worse, a clown!", he jokes.

So naturally I have to mock him. "Well, you could be a kidnapper! Or even worse, a boy who sits on strangers laps!"

He gives me a look that only a person with a little common sense would give. "Touché," he says. I am so glad I got to win that!

He looks at me and puts out his hand. "I'm Jacob." he says. Should I shake it and let a person into my life that might leave me too?

I realize I hesitated and so I give his hand a firm shake. "I'm Ellie," I say.
