Ji Hoo's POV (continued)

A pair of doors swings open, filling the room with light.

"Let me handle this. I have an idea." A man with a deep voice. My eyes look over and I see a man in a white coat with several other in men in the same attire. Some with clipboards and suitcases. I lose my vision but still hear.

"NO, I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS!"

"WHY NOT?! Are you sending this boy to his death?!"

"HE IS MY PATIENT!"

There is the sound of struggling but it stops as more men enter with the same creak of the swinging double doors.

"You'll regret this!" The voice is muffled and dies out.

"No, I won't." A man says in a whisper.

And I black out completely.

-

My eyes open to a blur of colors.

"Was the experiment a failure?" A voice asks.

"No, look he's waking up!" Another man yells.

My vision focuses and I see the men surrounding me.

"W-Where am I?" I ask nervously. I look around and it seems to be a hospital room.

"A hospital. You were on the verge of death but recovered." A man says. I remember everything that had happened now.

"Thank you for saving my life." I say trying to bow in bed.

"Don't move too much now, it'll be difficult after surgery." A doctor says steadying me. My mind flashes back to the girl who 'saved' me.

"Uhm, could I get a wheelchair?" I ask. One of them brings in a wheelchair. I get out of bed with ease and they gasp. I look towards them with a weird expression. They go into a intense whispering session. The pain I usually felt in my legs subsided. It felt weird so I sat in the chair anyways. I feel the IV tug on my arm.

"Could this be removed?" I ask and the doctor who got me the chair took out the IV bandaging my arm.

"Is the girl who came in with me alive?" I ask, they whisper and nod.

"Could I go see her?" I ask and they discuss yet again and come to a decision.

"Yes, the room on the right end of the hallway." The lead scientist says. I put on a smile.

"Thanks for everything, docs." I say and leave the room. But before I leave I hear a whispering...

"Sir, the experiment was a huge success!"

"Shh! Not so loud! But yes... That boy will be a big part of our experiment... Let's call it... Project J."

-

I closed the door behind me as I rolled my chair in. I remembered her face in the rain.

Why?

Why help a disabled kid like me? I roll into the room and see her sleeping with an IV in her arm. Her face and skin was clean and pure now. Her hair lay perfectly beside her face. I feel my heart beat faster. Was it fear? No... it wasn't fear... because it... felt good.

At least I guessed so.

I wasn't sure how I felt. In all the 11 years I lived, I wasn't sure how I felt. I rolled my chair closer and reached for her face but she woke up instantly. I retracted my arm as quick as lightning. She sat up. Looked at me with a glare. Then stared for a moment. Eventually, gasping with realization.

"Ah, you're that kid I tried to save!" She exclaimed. I looked at her, shocked. Her personality and looks definitely didn't match up. She face-palmed herself.

"I kinda failed on that though... didn't I?" She says solemnly. I just stay silent and still.

"Wait a second... Weren't you all cut up? How... How'd ya make it out alive?!" She asks with a look of realization and shock. My voice seemed to come back now.

"I-I don't know. At least we're still alive." I state. I think back. Why was I still alive? Did it... Did it have to do with that Project J?

"Look at you! Unscarred! But you're in a wheelchair. They break your legs or something?" She asks.

"I've been disabled all my life. I have no muscle in my legs. I can barely stand... Well, now I can at least..." I say remembering the feeling of standing up recently.

"Oh... But whaddya mean 'now you can'?" She asks. I didn't know, but I assumed it was the 'experiment'.

"After the operation when I was cut up... My legs got stronger I guess." I say. We stay silent and she lets out a 'huh'? I nervously try to start another conversation but she asks a question first.

"What day and time is it?" She asks.

"7:00 a.m. The morning after we got ganged up on." I say.

"Shit! I'm late for school!" She yells ripping out the IV and running out.

"Wait! Your injuries!" I say as she stumbles but she keeps running. I can't catch up with my chair but I realize something.

"I never got your name!" I yell as she ran down the hallway. She smiles as she stops at the stair entrance.

"Lee Chaerin! You?" She yells. I smile back.

"Kang Ji Hoo!" I yell. She salutes and runs off.

I laugh to myself. Lee Chaerin... huh?
