“C’mon Nora it’s going to be fun” said a girl called Leedi, She is my best friend and Kemmy too.
I’ve heard that phrase for the millionth time, they are trying so hard to drag me to go for a party organised by our course mate; Sarah Obieh. I’m not very interested since I’m not her fan, but it’s a party and my crazy friends cannot miss the fun or better still would not go without me.
It’s a Wednesday night, apparently dad travelled to Abuja for some academic meeting, Nancy will look after Jamie and Jerry can do well on his own-I thought, so it happens that I can actually have fun tonight, I mean the kind of fun I’ve not had in a long while since..
“Babe, are you in?” Kemmy said from where she sat trying to put on makeup. I turned my gaze to her feeling really happy that I have these two girls as my friends. We make up a family; Leedi is fair, tall and slim, I have a dark skin and a bit chubby then Kemmy is the short one with a mixed skin; she is neither fair nor dark, just the in-betwixt-chocolate-skin.
“Jesus, Nora if you want me out of your home, simply say and stop staring at me besides I’m not some skink stick you call a boyfriend, or you can tell me how beautiful I look on this dress.” Kemmy said and I’m pretty sure she got an A+ in gesticulation classes so she has the right to practice it here.
“kemmy, calm down no one’s sending you out” Leedi said while we both laughed.
Yes, speaking of a skink boyfriend, my heart sank. Since the incident at his house few weeks back I haven’t heard from him. Oh well, I called his line several times but he wouldn’t pick up or return the calls. Anyway, that’s nothing to bother about, I thought so.
I finally gave in to their pressure because they wouldn’t let me and mostly because it’s been a while we went to a party, the last time we did it was extremely boring, well the last time before the last time it was fun.
We did few things, like help Nancy make dinner, watched our favourite soap opera; tinsel, then we chatted while dressing up. You know that sort of girl’s chitchat about boys, school days, the couples in our department and any gossip you can think of.
By the time we were finally ready, we were two hours late. Kels- Leedi’s boyfriend had offered to pick us up to the party, when he arrived I bided Nancy a goodbye and she promised to stay awake till I returned.
We rode with Kels, Kemmy ran fast and took the shot gun leaving Leedi and I to strut to the back seats. They joked about several things while I remained quiet and stalked on instant messaging.
We Arrived at Sarah’s house at Osongama estate, the place was cool, it had to be cool after all it was in the rich zone of the town.
“By the way you girls look hot” I heard Kels say, we smiled gratefully even though I thought he should have complimented Leedi more. We stepped out of the car while Kels gave Leedi a quick kiss; I saw her face turn into a tomato. Then he turned to us and told us to have fun before he pulled out of the driveway and drove off speedily.
“Where is he going? Isn’t he supposed to come with us” I asked.
“Got a test tomorrow, according to him” Leedi said emphasizing the first part of the sentence. Kels has always been a studious person and rarely had any moment for leisure; he prolly will adjust since he’s met the fun queen.
“Oh God! This is not good for a start” kemmy exclaimed. We were in the crowded party house; there were too many familiar faces that I mostly don’t hold conversations with.
“isn’t that, oh no” kemmy said directing me to look at the scene on the stage. I recognized the girl, the same one I saw with my boyfriend at his house and in fact they posed like an already known couple. David held her on her waist and said something I believed must very interesting which made her smile heartily. I stared at him and our eyes locked, he didn’t look worried instead he turned his attention back to his girl. My heart sank.
“I’ll get us a drink” I said not wanting to appear hurt but before I could move leedi stopped me and offered to do it instead.
“Nora we came here to have fun and make new friends too, don’t let it get to you” kemmy said. I nodded and wished for real it wouldn’t get to me.
She shoved me, no she dragged me to where games were played and practically forced me into playing with her and each time she won I had to dance for her and believe me she won more than I expected. Don’t be surprised I did if you consider lifting one hand in the air and turning 360 as a very good dancing step.
Few miniutes later leedi walked towards us, we had forgotten that she was supposed to get us drinks.
“I have been looking you two idiots” she said raising her voice loud enough which made the whole room shaken. I stood lifelessly while kemmy’s mouth was opened so wide.
“Sorry” leedi apologized and handed our drinks to us; fayrouz for me and snapp for kemmy “someone pissed me off” she added
“kels?” kemmy and I said at the same time
“Nooooo, someone else” she said and gave us the impression that it was not to be pushed further.
We played the games more and split up to have what we called ‘personal fun’. I didn’t know exactly where to start from so I just sat there and sipped my drink until this cute dude walked up to where I was and took the next seat beside me.
“are you Miss HIS” he said quietly and I shook my head. I wasn’t miss history and international studies why would he think I am.
“Really, you’re beautiful though” he added with a hearty smile. I smiled back way to show courtesy as first impression.
“So what’s your name?” he asked. I was about saying my name when the interruption came.
“Nora, what are you doing here” I heard. I turned to see who would ask such a silly question, I came to party if he didn’t know.
“What does it look like I’m doing” I snapped back immediately I saw it was the skink boyfriend.
“I need to talk to you now” he commanded. Yes my lord of bullshit.
“David Williams, I’m sure you have better manners than these” I said mockingly then I turned to the cute guy and held out hand
“yes, I want to give you my numbers” I told him and cooperatively he brought out his phone and handed it to me, I took it typed in my numbers and handed it back to him thanking him for keeping me company even though it was for very short time.
“listen Nora, I don’t care what you do, just hear me out” David said and I returned my attention to him
“I don’t care about you either so be very fast with your shit” I said angrily
“ I’m breaking up now, it’s over. That’s what you needed to know cause for me we were never together. So stop fooling around as my girlfriend.” He said
“Oh really, it’s because of that girl right” if asked he opened his mouth to say something but I cut him off
“It is then, so I was just your side chick I get it and thanks for letting me know. I wish you the best of regrets when you realize how much of a loser you are” I gave him a piece of my mind and took to my heels. I ran as fast as I could. I didn’t bother looking for my friends or waiting up for them. I left the party and made my way home.
I had just lost another person I loved so much only that this time it wasn’t death it was a break up. I refused to cry, I tried not to cry, I didn’t want to cry for someone that didn’t deserve my tears. It’s over now; the lies, the moments the hurts the love, everything is over with David Williams.
I wished it wasn’t.
