My Hair is My Soul

My hair is my soul
I worked hard for this hair
This boy thinks he can just ruin it
This boy thinks he has a right to my hair
Just because of the deal
I made
for a kazoo?
Nah
I worked hard to get it this way
My curly locks
I worked to perfection
From days as a young child
My parents brushing my hair
My mom was perfect
My dad the reason I no longer feel pain when my hair is pulled
To days with my mom looking for curl products
To the kids cuts place that cut my hair
eh? okay.
And when that one place straightened my gorgeous glorious hair
A cut it all to the same level
Not realizing that curls curl at different lengths
I laugh now
Think about how I looked like Lucius Malfoy
Now dreading that ever happening again
It was cute because we were kids
But the confused look on the barbers faces when they saw our multicultural asses walk-in
It makes me scared for my life
Now we've found a salon that actually works
And as my hair gets darker no longer enduring the teasing of "Goldilocks"
But now enduring the
"you should straighten your hair"
"I wanna see it straightened"
But the day
I did do it
I got responses of
"Your hair isn't straight"
"It's still curly"
I did what u wanted I think
Them not realizing that of course, my hair wouldn't stay straight
The curls are too powerful
Also, the humidity made it frizzy and go back to being curly
Because I wasn't gonna chemically straighten my hair
I had seen the damage on enough of my friend's hair
And that ain't it
So
Nowadays I quietly sit there with my hair
Some days hearing "oh my god I love your hair"
other days hearing snickers and whispers
because my hair was too big that day,
or too frizzy,
or not how They want My hair to be
Or other black girls being like
"I love your hair I wish my hair was like that"
When they should be proud of there hair
I'm proud of there hair
I love their hair
I wish for their hair
But for other reason
Not to be talked about now
Anyway
My hair
And as I sit in this car thinking
My mother is talking to me about the crucible
And Miller's sexism
And John proctor's ignorance
And I am thinking of my hair
Which I don't mind saying
Looks pretty damn good today
