It was just another day in the life for Krista Varillion. It was a quiet day so far at the Varillion funeral home. Krista had been working there since she was a teenager. Now a grown woman of 30 she had become the head mortician. She worked with her father, an honest man who had inherited the trade, who was happy to pass it down to the next generation. Krista was beautiful, but a bit of an introvert. She had an hour glass figure, and gorgeous brunette locks. It was a surprise to everyone in town that she had remained single for all these years, but work was what was most important to her. She went over some files on her desk with a sharp eye, and fumbled through old documents. She had no problem crunching numbers when it was slow, this was a business after all, and hopefully a career she could continue for years to come. There was a gentle tapping at the door. She looked up slightly from what she was doing to invite the visitor in. It was her father, as usual. He was balding and wore a suit, very typical. "Hi sweetie. There has been an accident earlier today. I'm afraid it's quite the tragedy this time. A young woman by the name of Laura passed in the hospital. It was a sudden and aggressive pneumonia. The coroner will arrive with her in a while. I know you have been working long hours lately, I get it, you want to follow in my foot steps, and I am very proud of that, but I can take this one if you need a break. You need to take some time off eventually." Krista was looking up at her father now. She bit down on her lip slightly as she listened. Poor baby, she was used to this sort of thing, but it never got any easier to hear bad news. She always resolved to set her emotions aside so that she could be as respectful to the mourners as possible. Death had been apart of her life since childhood, and she knew what loss truly meant, still this one wasn't going to be easy. "It's fine dad. I have a few things to finish up, and I'll still have time to prep the body. You know I don't mind." She reassured him with a cheerfulness in her voice, as much as the situation would warrant at least. "Okay then sweet heart. I'm going to be heading out soon. If you need anything call me, and this conversation isn't over either. You need to get out of here and mingle with the living at some point. If you want to continue our family legacy you will need to find a proper suitor eventually." Krista cut him off using her hands to wave his comments aside. "I know, I know. It just hasn't seemed right. I'll get there I just want to make sure I have everything put together for myself." He smiled, "I know that, but remember, I can't hand you ownership of this company if you aren't wedded. That is the way is has always been, you know how much of a stickler your grandfather was." And with that he turned and gently closed the door behind him. After about an hour the coroner arrived to deliver the body. Krista was on the scene and guided them down to the room where she would fix up the body. They expressed remorse properly and exchanged goodbyes. When Krista was alone with the body she carefully and respectfully removed the body bag. On the examination table Krista was able to get her first full visual of the young woman. She was absolutely stunning. Krista's heart sank and froze and skipped a beat all at the same time. She couldn't take her eyes off of the girls face. She felt an explosion swelling inside of her and blood rush to her cheeks. She couldn't remember anyone ever making her feel this way. What was this feeling? Krista gently stroked the skin of Laura's right arm. She was so precious, Krista was smitten. This could only mean one thing in her mind, true love.... Her heart was racing now. She simply could not send this beautiful body to the crematorium. What other option did she have? She didn't want to risk doing anything that could hurt her career, but at the same time every fiber of her being was telling her this wasn't right. How could she just let go of the most beautiful person she had ever seen? She couldn't. She was in love for the first time in her life. It didn't matter if her soul mate was breathing or not, she would do anything for this petite blonde beauty. In this specific scenario that meant covering her back up, carting her out to her car, and driving her to her apartment. This was very crazy, Krista felt like she was out of her body the entire time. She drove cautiously, very aware of every person she saw along the way. Thankfully she made it home undetected just as darkness spilled over the city. She hauled the body of Laura up into her apartment as quietly as possible. Once inside she layed her gently on her queen size bed. Her eyes caught up on the beautiful corpse once again. She was even more breath taking in the light of her own bed room. It wasn't clear what the next step of this insane pllan was at the moment, but Krista didn't care. They could be alone together for tonight while she figured it out. "welcome home, lover." She whispered quietly to herself. Immediately Krista went over to the air conditioner and turned it on full blast. "I can take care of you. I know how to preserve a body." It had been a very exhausting an emotional day for her, and so she went to the linen closet and grabbed as many comforters as she owned. She threw them all over the body, and slid into bed right next to it. "Tonight I will keep you warm, and tomorrow we can talk about how we are going to run away together.... You're just so beautiful I love you so much. I will figure out how to get back one way or another, I promise. Under the covers Krista stroked Laura's cold dead face. She thought of kissing her lips, but chose her forehead instead. The skin was tight, and without heat, but even so it filled Krista with joy. She wrapped her arms around the limp body and snuggled in close. Suddenly her eyes shot open. "I need a replacement body!" She screeched terrified to herself. "Oh God, if I show up to work tomorrow without a body they'll know somethings up. She shot out of bed and dressed in haste. "I'll be back baby, I just need to take care of something real quick." She ran to the bathroom and grabbed a few bottles, on of which had the words embalming fluid written on it. She jumped back into her car, making sure she had locked up tight. How could she be so foolish? She finally had the love of her life in her bed and she was about to blow it. No. She would do anything to protect Laura, and she knew no matter what she would have to work up the guts to do what needed to be done.
