Valerie gets a call from her mother just before she's about to leave her apartment. It's a video call, her laptop ringing from her room. She almost doesn't answer it, but since she doesn't have her phone, gives in just in case it's important.
"Val? That boy, Ethan, the one who saved your life, was just here with his brother--"
"Wait, mama, what? Why were they at your house?" She asks, furrowing her eyebrows. "How did they have the address? What were they looking for?"
"Did you know he had a twin? Such beautiful boys--"
"Mom! Please, what happened?" Valerie interrupts. She hasn't heard a word from either of them in a while, and she wasn't expecting to. Grayson's still on her mind all the time though, which is much more than he should be. Valerie hasn't found any way to fix things.
No matter how hard she tried, she's been unable to contact Zero. She thought maybe talking to Grayson more might jog his memory, but as they're not exactly friends and she doesn't have his number, she couldn't come up with a way to spend time any time with him. That left her just about ready to give up... but perhaps this meant something.
"Apparently one of them was interested in speaking with you. I told them they could come over and that you would be here soon, but Ethan's brother got hurt before I could," she says, frowning on her end. "I do think he's okay. Had a nasty fall down our steps and hit his head, but he was breathing fine and not bleeding."
Valerie's heart stops. "Grayson's hurt?"
Sure, maybe he didn't remember her. But if he was hurt, she had to go see him.
After grilling her mom, she drives straight to the hospital he was taken to. It was a little out of the way, but she makes it there without issue. She's missed him. She's missed him dearly.
Going from spending every moment with him to not seeing him at all was heartbreaking. It wasn't supposed to happen like this--they were supposed to wake up and be okay to continue their lives, together.
Instead, all she was left with were the memories of him. The memories of the boy she was falling for, and she was alone.
As she enters the hospital doors, she realizes she has no clue how to find him. They definitely wouldn't tell her his room number if she asked, he probably wasn't even under his real name.
As if her prayers have been answered, she sees Ethan pacing back and forth in the waiting room. His face scrunches up in confusion when he sees her.
"Valerie? How did you--?"
"My mom told me. I had to make sure he was okay," she mumbles.
He lets out a deep sigh and nods. He's not mad about the company to distract him, but he's filled with worry and a little upset she's here after not answering Grayson. This wouldn't have happened if she had.
"Why didn't you answer any of his texts or calls?" Ethan huffs. "He's been trying to get a hold of you for days."
Valerie frowns. Of course this happened. "My phone, I--it broke and I haven't had time to get a new one. I've been super busy catching up with everything since I woke up... I wasn't expecting to hear from him."
School for the most part has been kicking her ass. She planned to get a new phone this weekend, because between work and school her weekdays have been pretty full lately. She only really had free time in the evenings after things started closing. Truthfully, most of that time was spent trying to think of how to make him remember, or at least see him again. Not the best way to get on with her life, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to after everything.
