Sam and Dean were surprised when Gabriel started showing up to help them. It first started when they were working a case in Arkansas. Said case was on a monster that was ripping people's throats out, but it wasn't a vampire. And none of the organs were missing, so it couldn't be a werewolf.
"If it's not a vampire or a werewolf, then what the hell is this thing?" Dean exclaimed, throwing his hands up in frustration.
"Could it be some sort of vengeful spirit?" Sam wondered aloud.
"Ding ding! Someone give the moose a medal," Gabriel said, appearing in a flap of wings.
"Gabriel? Why the hell are you here?" Sam asked the trickster, who was now lounging on Sam's bed.
"Figured I'd stop by and see how things are going with my favorite Winchesters," Gabriel explained nonchalantly. "Dean, you can put down the angel blade. I'm not here to hurt you, and besides, that pathetic thing won't kill me."
Dean relented and slowly put the angel blade back on the table. "Well, you've stopped by. Why don't you leave now?"
"Don't you want to know who your vengeful spirit is?" Gabriel asked with a smirk.
"No-" Dean started to say, but Sam cut him off.
"If you'll tell us. But after that, you have to leave."
"Aww, it seems like you don't like me very much. Oh well. Look for William McCloud," The trickster said, then disappeared with a mysterious smile and a flap of wings.

"Alright, so William McCloud is buried somewhere in this cemetery. Let's get looking," Sam said when they reached the cemetery.
A few minutes later, Dean called Sam over to him. He had found the grave. "Let's get digging, Sammy."
No sooner than they had opened the coffin, the angry ghost of William McCloud appeared and threw both of them away from the grave. Dean landed in the grass somewhere and Sam was thrown into a tree.
Sam staggered to his feet, vision spinning. He was bleeding from the head and probably had a concussion, but the ghost was advancing towards Dean and he couldn't let that happen. He ran to the grave and quickly salted the bones and poured gasoline on them, but he was thrown back again before he could light them up.
The ghost was in front of Dean and there was no way that Sam could make it there in time. He tried to get up again, but the spinning in his head made it difficult to know which way was which. At the last second, Gabriel appeared and dropped a match in the grave.
Sam and Dean both sighed in relief when the ghost went up in flames, and Sam flopped onto the ground. He opened his eyes again to see Gabriel standing over him. "William sure did a number on you, didn't he?" The trickster asked and leaned down to grab Sam's arm. Then he flew back to the motel, leaving Dean in the bushes.
As soon as they appeared in the motel, Sam was stumbling to his knees, trying not to throw up.
"Please don't. At least not while I'm in range," Gabriel quipped.
"No promises," Sam managed to groan out. Then he felt fingers touch his head and his vision stopped spinning, along with the pain. "Thanks."
"No problem Samsquatch," Gabriel replied and flopped onto Sam's bed.
"Dude," Sam said. "I need to sleep there."
"I know," Gabriel simply replied and shot a smirk at Sam. Sam just sighed and headed towards the bathroom for a shower. Dean was going to be so pissed when he got back. Gabriel had basically kidnapped Sam. Well, that's how Dean would take it anyways.
As soon as Sam stepped into the water, he cursed. It was freezing cold.
"I hate winter so much," Sam muttered aloud to himself. Then suddenly, the water turned hotter. Sam hummed in content and started washing his hair. He may have spent a little longer in the shower than usual, enjoying the hot water. But he wasn't going to tell anyone that.
Sam got out of the shower and rubbed the towel over his head quickly, making sure his hair was damp and not soaking before he wrapped the towel around his waist. He had forgotten about Gabriel's presence until he stepped out of the bathroom and heard a whistle.
"Can it," Sam growled and quickly grabbed his clothes. He took his clothes into the bathroom and changed, away from the prying eyes of the archangel. When he got out of the bathroom, he sent a bitchface towards Gabriel, who was still lounging on his bed.
"You're welcome, by the way," Gabriel spoke up. "And thanks for the show. Who knew nerds could have that much muscle."
"Just shut up and let me have my bed back, Gabriel," Sam growled. He was too tired for this.
"Ooh, feisty," Gabriel said and smiled at Sam, but he relented and got out of his bed. "Fine, I'll just take Dean's."
"He'll stab you," Sam warned before flopping face-first onto his bed. Within seconds, he was asleep.
Gabriel smiled fondly at the sleeping Sam. "Sleep well, Moose."
Gabriel really needed to stop caring about this gangly mess of limbs and daddy issues before it ended up tearing him apart. But he couldn't. He wanted to give everything to Sam and he knew that he could. Damn moose.
Gabriel's thoughts were interrupted by the rattling of a key in the motel door. He quickly made himself invisible, not wanting to get stabbed. It might not kill him, but it sure as hell would hurt. Dean shut the door and grumbled to himself angrily. He was soaked to the bone and had probably been caught out in the rain. Oh well, serves him right.
Gabriel smiled when Dean cursed from the bathroom upon stepping into the ice-cold water. The only one who was going to get special treatment was Sam. But that was only because he couldn't stop himself from helping Sam. Feelings were such a burden. Especially when they were unrequited.
Sam shifted in his sleep, a frown on his face. Big brother Luci must have been messing with him. That can't be. Gabriel lightly touched Sam's forehead and put up a barrier between Sam and Lucifer. He brushed a strand of hair out of Sam's face as he pulled his hand back. Shit. He'd just chosen a side, hadn't he? Well, that decision was inevitable, seeing as how he'd caught feelings for Sam while he was tormenting him on all those Tuesdays.
Gabriel disappeared in a flurry of feathers and Sam slept well that night.
