Prologue.
He balanced on the balls of his feet in a crouched position as I watched him carefully from my beautiful meadow filled with long grass and red roses. I wasn’t really surprised to see him here once again though because he came everyday seeming like a lost puppy, he was by the river’s edge as normal staring into the water and looking at his own reflection, I think. I could almost class this behaviour as sweet, until I remember why he’s forever here and why people now refer to me as The Wild Rose forgetting my real name of Eliza Day.
His raven hair flopped in front of his face as he leaned forwards some more and swirled his fingers back and forth through the dirty, cold water sending ripples to the other side of the bank and back again. His pale cheeks expanded as he huffed and rocked backwards before sitting down on his backside.
His wet hand ran through his shoulder length hair, pushing it out of his face for a brief moment as he stared into that gap between the reeds almost looking as though he was wishing for that particular space to be filled once again. He dug through his black trouser pockets before pulling out a simple, thin silver chain that had a plain cross hanging in the middle, catching the afternoon sun as he hung it in front of his face, watching as it twisted this way and that. My hand automatically reached up to my neck where that necklace should rest, however it was bare, like I knew it would be. He stole everything for me without a moment’s hesitation.
A sob brought my attention back to him, he had brought his knees up to his chest as he held my necklace tightly in his fisted hand bringing it up to his mouth as though kissing it as the tears flowed down his cheeks. It was no good though, everyone was suffering from his actions last week, yet they never suspected him.
My name is Eliza Day and this is my story of how I became known as The Wild Rose…
