Chapter 11
He stared at her like she had gone crazy.
“Aishu?”
She blinked at him. “I said Diya. I meant Diya.”
“Four points to you,” he said clearly, counting down his questions.
“Hey my answer is not wrong per se.”
“Then I demand that my answer of both my parents and my first kiss both to be accepted.”
“Whoa whoa, both your parents was a wrong answer.”
“We are talking in circles here, Aishu,” he said, sighing and rubbing his eyes.
She twisted her lips and said, “Fine. Shall we call it a draw?”
He shook his head. “We need a clear winner.”
“Why?” she asked sullenly.
“So we can know who needs to say first.”
“Alright,” she said with bad grace, “What shall we do?”
“A tie-breaker?”
“Sure. What shall it be?”
There was a silence of five minutes.
“I am blank,” Aishu admitted.
“I have an idea...,” muttered Arul, sounding hesitant.
Aishu bit her lip. “I do too.”
“What is it?” His eagerness was overflowing.
“You go first.”
“No you go.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Why are you blushing?”
She turned beet pink. He neared her on the couch, facing her as he tipped her chin up to look in her eyes.
“What is it?” His voice was husky and hoarse at the same time. Her coyness would be the death of him.
Her eyes squeezed closed and she shook her head. “Just tell me what you thought of.”
He paused and murmured, “I can’t tell it either.”
Her eyes stayed close, her breath on his face. “Toss a coin?”
He let his fingers span out from her chin and cup her jaw. “How about, we write our thoughts in individual papers, toss the coin and whoever wins, gets their wish?”
She bit her lip. He was sure she was seducing him now.
“Okay,” she sounded equally seduced.
“Open your eyes,” he commanded softly. After a second’s pause, she opened her eyes. There was a light inside them, glowing gently and drawing him nearer. Her eyes drooped slightly, her lips slackening invitingly. He swallowed hard.
“Will you toss?” he queried.
She sighed, her breath rushing past him as she swallowed too and muttered her assent. With great reluctance, he moved back. Picking a chit each, they wrote their challenge and folded the paper neatly.
“Toss,” he said, avoiding her eyes.
“Call,” the coin swivelled in the air.
“Heads,” his voice was low. The small coin fell face down, showing the neatly engraved number 1.
