It’s a small office with bookshelf a desk and a window behind the doctor’s chair where he’s looking at them. There’s a bunch of papers on the desk few files spread in front of him and his name tag that says DR ERIC SHARP written in capital letters there’s a file cabinet by the side of the door and a computer in front of him a small plant in the corner about four feet high that’s about to die. He took a deep breath and looked at Kaitlin with a very sad look on his face ‘’I’m sorry miss Russell’’ he said “Its cancer” the words hit Kaitlin like a bullet she looked over at her mother who is already in tears he continued “the good news is…  ‘’good news”? Interject Kaitlin “there’s no good news any more I have cancer there’s the only news there is” she yelled out “you’re right I’m sorry” Dr Sharp said in a calming voice, she is still looking at him with a very angry look on her face. “Honey that’s not what he meant” said her mom she looks back at Dr Sharp “what do we do now” with her voice cracking up. “we we caught it at early stage so there’s a chance you can beat this thing we need to start the treatment right away. Kaitlin already faced out of the conversation but she can still hear the doctor talking to her mother about chemotherapy radiation and other forms of cancer treatment.
“It’s a cervical cancer so it has about 93% 5- year relative survival rate” he began “at stages 0 and 1A we need to treat the abnormally cells before they can grow or spread to other area of the body” he went on telling them all about cervical cancer its treatment home care and other relevant information.
He continued “We need to perform more test to know the kind of treatment that best suit you miss” “more test? Asked Kaitlin frustrated “Yes” replied the doctor “You know its cancer what more do you need? “Yes there are more factors we need to consider the choice of precancerous lesion of the cervix depends on a number of factors” “like what? ” ask her mother “well” the doctor continue “we have to know if she has a low or high grade lesion if you want children in the future and…… ”Of Couse I want children and I think” she pause for a second takes a breath “just do whatever you need to do doctor” her mom interfere. Great so make an appointment for next week come in and we’ll go from there.
They both stand up her mother extend her hand to the doctor “thank you doctor” he shakes her hand “no problem ma’am I’ll see you next week. Kaitlin has left the office already.
They walk in the hallway in silence walking side by side going to the elevator her mom pressed the call button and they wait ding! The elevator opens “may be dad knows there’s something wrong with me that’s why he left” Kaitlin mutters without taking a glance at her mother as she walked into the elevator her mom stood still heartbroken starring at her with so much hurt and sadness on her face her eyes filled with tears before she finally follow her in and press the button again and elevator closes.
