A/N: i hope this is going well so far :(( also thank you supporting this story so far!! it's been pretty fun writing this and trying a supernatural approach that i really hope is working :))))
kai was very confused as to why the choi siblings both reacted to him with such shock as if they never saw him before. the young demon was there when yeonjun first learned how to talk which saddened the younger when he found out about his death since he wasn't summoned at the time.
he moved in and out of the current reality and would only exist if he was summoned by his masters, which were the choi parents until they died as well. he remembered his name being called out and he arrived too late. he witnessed the woman he considered his own mother have her throat ripped out and the monster that killed her ran away before he could do anything.
the boy cried over her as the life drained from her eyes and she gave him one last command; protect her sons. kai would rather be sent to eternal damnation before he lets any more people die.
anyways, the demon did know these boys for most of the life and even watched over them when their parents were busy. he used to gush over how cute the choi siblings were when they were babies and wanted to give them many belly rubs like he did to mrs. choi when she was pregnant with soobin and beomgyu.
the two remaining choi brothers were practically adults and introducing a world they never knew existed at a later age would be very difficult for kai since kids are open to believe anything with no question.
a voice clears his throat and kai snapped back into reality to focus on the two boys staring at him, one with patience and warmth as the other is confused and shocked. beomgyu spoke, "do you wanna explain yourself or not?"
kai shrugged. "i don't know. i kinda have all day to explain anything so..." the silver haired boy scoffed and turned to leave, but kai kept him in place then used his finger to spin it around. beomgyu is turned towards the demon again who smirked. "thanks for staying!"
"as if i had a choice."
"oh, you don't. trust me." kai said with a smile which caused beomgyu to quiet down. the demon giggled then clapped his hands. "anyways! lemme start off by saying that i am not here to cause any harm, but to prevent it. my name is kai and i am your guardian angel!" he gave the boys fingers hearts and soobin laughed at the cuteness of the boy as his brother scowled.
beomgyu pointed out, "you don't look like an angel." his brother lightly hit him on his shoulder, causing the boy flinch then pout as well. "what?! i'm just saying-"
"gyu, stop." soobin scolded softly. beomgyu listened to his brother with a ghost of a smile on his face since he was still happy about the older expressing himself more. kai was also glad to see the ravenette broken from his trance. "you can continue, kai."
the demon nodded then smiled brightly at beomgyu who avoided his eyes to look at his hands. "you are right, beomgyu, because i am not an angel. i'm...well, i'm a demon, but a lower classed one so i don't feel like going all crazy on humans and just go nom on their heads."
"...nom on their heads?" beomgyu questioned with skepticism.
nodding, kai answered him. "yeah! like, go into a frenzy and nom on humans like others did to...oh no." the boy's mood deflated as he remembered the four lives lost because of demons nomming on humans.
the eldest choi furrowed his eyebrows at the sudden mood change of the demon. "like others did to who? kai, what do you mean?" he asked.
kai's tail subconsciously wrapped around his waist to comfort him as he felt the conversation slowly tread into dangerous territory. he didn't know how the boys would react to hearing that their loved ones weren't killed by animals, but something much more dangerous.
"i really should've kept my mouth shut..." kai murmured to himself as his black eyes casted to the ground to avoid looking into the broken eyes of two boys.
beomgyu began to glare at the boy and said, "no, no, no. tell us what you were gonna say. there's no way in hell i'll trust you with my life if you keep secrets from us."
the demon shook his head, "it's to protect you."
"what type of guardian demon keeps secrets from the people it's trying to protect?"
"the type that doesn't want you to be overwhelmed with the truth!" kai exclaimed. he didn't like the doubt beomgyu had in him when all he wanted was to be trusted. he needed both boys to trust him with protecting them from the dangers to come.
beomgyu's brown eyes hardened as he looked dead into kai's eyes, causing the demon to shudder under the intense gaze, and scoffed. "i don't need a sketchy fairy to protect me and my brother, so cut the bullshit and leave."
soobin gasped and looked at his brother with shock on his face. he immediately began to scold his brother. "choi beomgyu, watch what you say! kai has been nothing but kind to us and our family for who knows how long! he is here to help us-"
"if he's here to protect our family then why the fuck did he let them die?! he let them all die! he could've protected them then, but he didn't and i am not going to let him in our home just to let you die too!" beomgyu yelled. tears swelled in his eyes and kai began to tear up as well. he knew all beomgyu wanted was for his brother to be safe and happy, but he didn't have to be so mean.
the demon didn't mean for them to die. he wasn't there when taehyun and yeonjun were killed because he wasn't summoned, therefore he thought he wasn't needed until after it happened. he remembered how devastated the choi parents were and he swore to never leave their side, but mr. choi told him to go have his own fun on his last night alive.
kai smelt sulfur in the air, signaling that a demon was lurking by, and tried to convince them that he needed to stay to protect them and their son, but mr. choi sent him away. when the words, "your service is not needed and now you sleep", where spoken, kai was pulled out of reality to his own void. he tried going back, but he couldn't. what his masters said goes and he couldn't break that code.
he regretted being so lenient. god, did kai regret it. he wished he could go back to tell the people he considered his parents to stay and get beomgyu's snack during the day. he wanted to go back even further to find taehyun's damn cat and return it to the boy so he never had to go out in the night, never to be seen whole again.
it wasn't until he felt his throat vibrate did he realized he was sobbing. kai was sobbing because he felt like such a failure. once again, he failed his family and had no excuses.
beomgyu growled in anger, "why the fuck are you crying?! you don't deserve to after all you've done! you ruined my family all because of you being so weak!"
"STOP TALKING!!" kai exclaimed using his true voice to silence the boy who flinched away from him. soobin's skin paled at the sweet boy's voice sounding so menacing yet so mournful.
the demon released a sob as he put his face in his hands and his shoulder shook as he sobbed. he never could properly grieve their deaths because he had to stay strong for the chois, but at that moment, he felt weak. he felt vulnerable. he felt defeated.
kai questioned through his sobs, "y-you don't th-think i know that i-i'm weak?! you don't th-think i wish i d-did more?! you think i-i willingly let them die?! the people i c-call family?!" he glared at beomgyu who refused to meet his eyes. he wanted the boy to understand his side. he needed to understand. "they sent me away so i-i couldn't be there! i can't appear without my master or my mistress's approval! they sent me away when taehyun and yeonjun were killed! they sent me away when you wanted your snack and were killed too! all by the same demons!"
he really shouldn't have said demons because both chois looked at him with two different expressions. one of shock and confusion and the other with anger and slight fear.
oh, how kai wished the fear wasn't toward him. he really did.
