edit 08.09.2020: disclaimer! when this story was written, the rumours about woojin's involvement in the sexual assault scandal were not around. i no longer support him or his work if all of the allegations are true, as i feel they are. he is in this story, but he will not be in any of my future stories as of this point. this story will not be edited, as removing him would significantly impact the story. sorry once again, but if this is understood, enjoy the book!

merfolk:

can transform into humans once reaching the age of 18.
can speak any language (naturally speak their own, which is a series of clicks and squeaks).
can control water + it's temperature.
have irregular patches of scales all over their legs, slightly pointed ears (think elf ears) and small fangs.

soulmates also exist in this universe, though they're only a merfolk thing. they barely ever happen, as soulmates consist of one mer and one human. when a mer finds their soulmate, a heart shaped scale will develop on their inner wrist, just below the palm. the human will have a mark that looks like a heart, usually of a deep blue shade, which shimmers in light. when the soulmates are near each other, the colour changes to a deep pink for both people.

the kim house:

owned by seungmin and woojin's parents, who decided to spend the rest of their life in the ocean, managing a large human company underwater. seungmin and woojin live there, and changbin and jisung visit often. the floor in one of the room retracts to reveal an entrance back into the ocean, which is why it looks like the brothers never leave the house, which they do, just in an extremely extra way.

hwang hyunjin:

human, loves ocean, huge flirt, drama queen, emotional, been turned into an aussieboo by felix and chan, values his friends, lives by coast, models for large company (dances with the same company when asked by minho) and has done for years (started at 16, despite being in school), 19, gay.

kim seungmin:

merfolk, (pastel blue and silver scales), woojin's younger brother, huge myday, adores singing and is incredible at it, wears a shell locket (says it's for protection), sweetheart but also the devil, seems calm, but is chaotic, literal puppy, 19, pansexual.

han jisung:

merfolk (coral red and pink scales), close with seungmin and trusts woojin deeply, always positive, affectionate and clingy, lives as a human (composer for a well known company, trying to convince the kims to audition), transformations are often accidentally triggered by emotions, crackhead, shares a braincell with felix as they know each other from work, 19, gay (has had past relationships with girls before realising that it wasn't what he wanted).

lee minho:

human, close friend of hyunjin's (through school, eventually because of profession. dances at the same company as him, and hyunjin fills in for a second role fairly often), doesn't believe in merfolk until it's literally in front of him, clingy and often jealous, a mean hoe, often zones out, has defined blinks, one hell of a confident gay, 21.

seo changbin:

merfolk (black and purple scales) despite constant teasing is good friends with seungmin and gets along well with woojin, is having an identity crisis, incredible rapper and speaks quickly due to this, has a song that he wrote, but wow does he regret it (him and jisung are jokingly trying to find a third person), hiding in the closet (bisexual), 20.

lee felix:

human, part of hyunjin's friend group, but shares a brain cell with jisung (working at the same company as a dancer and provides vocals at times), obsessed with the legend of merfolk and legends of the water, vocal duality leads many to believe he's an alien, chaotic loud crackhead, proud australian, sweetheart, human mosquito, bisexual, 19.

kim woojin:

merfolk (mint and silver scales), seungmin's elder brother, mariah carey's long lost son, caring and probably an angel, unhealthy obsession with the human food chicken, may be calm and responsible most of the time, but is just as crazy as the rest of his friends when he wants to be, cautious around humans, and this usually translates to not speaking to them often or at all, though he slips up every so often on the language front , fully aware of the dangers of him and his brother's identity being given away, asexual, 22.

bang chan:

human, looks after hyunjin and his friends like a parent, keeping them in check is something only he can manage, but is just as crazy as the others, chaotic australian, practically never sleeps (up all night composing, works for the same company as Felix and Jisung, but due to him never leaving his studio, he and jisung have never met), seemingly is obsessed with rubber ducks, practically Felix's elder brother, cares deeply about his friends, panromantic, 22.

yang jeongin:

human, tralassaphobic (afraid of the ocean and deep/dark water), youngest of hyunjin's friends, savage despite this, puppy-like baby, had braces for a period of time, bothered by literally everyone he knows for being a cutie, excitable, is probably possessed by the spirit of a dolphin, angelic voice, knows 'baby shark' by heart, questioning sexuality,18(still in school, so meets up with his hyungs on the weekend).
