Chapter 1
Today marks five years since he died. It still feels like yesterday, how is it possible that one thousand eight hundred and twenty five days have passed since I heard his laugh?
Last night I felt so consumed by loss. The guilt, anger and pain surged through me, making it impossible not to toss and turn, trying to out run the onslaught of chaos in my mind.It hurts every time I think about our last moments together. I wish I would have told him I loved him before he walked out the door. I hope he knew what he meant to me. If I could just have one more conversation with him....
We met our first year of college. He was handsome, fun and a little bit of a trouble maker. Not enough to ever actually get in trouble but he goofed off all the time and had that bad boy charm. When he was pursuing me and I wouldn't give him the time of day, he held a boom box outside of my window with the "Say anything song" blasting out of it while he held it over his head with a huge smile. My college room-mate, Aubrey, thought it was hysterical and threw a half-eaten apple at his head. When it hit him, he set down the boom box and grabbed a giant super soak-er gun off the lawn from the party the night before (at the apartment complex) and sprayed Aubrey and me right in the face. We slammed the window while yelling profanities at him.
He came back every day for a week playing me songs and asking me out in front of the whole apartment complex. He did something that was annoying every day that week. One day he filled the fountain in the entrance with dish soap and that sucker bubbled for weeks. He got in the fountain the next day and drank beer while singing "Splish splash I was taking a bath." It was ridiculous. I was annoyed, even though I knew he was truly adorable. On the 7th day he was on the lawn with a chair and a 6 pack of beer listening to music when I walked up.
"Hey Lily." He said with a giant smile and a twinkle in his mischievous blue eyes.
"Dexter." I said and kept walking right by him to the entrance.
"I brought a tent tonight." He said. "Got a pizza coming."
I turned around and laughed. "Our date was awful. You got drunk and puked on my shoes. I'm not really feeling very attracted to you anymore. Amused yes..." I said.
"You are the one that wanted to do shots. You set the tone." He said and took a step forward. "One more chance.....no drinking.....mini golf and pizza at a place that checks ID's. I really like you so much that I have resorted to making a complete jack ass out of myself."
"Something you seem very comfortable with." I quickly pointed out.
A week prior we went to a place for dinner, for our first date. I was so excited to have my first college date with such a catch. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. He was so foreign to me, being from New York City and me being from a small town. I carefully dressed and did my hair. He picked me up at my apartment and we walked to a restaurant close to campus. Half-way through the walk he grabbed my hand and I loved it. My heart raced at even his near proximity. When we ordered our dinners, he ordered a beer. The waiter didn't card so we just went with it and got so drunk.
He pushed me home in a shopping cart while we kicked down mailboxes and toilet papered houses. It was fun but by the end of the night he had gotten rather sloppy. He puked on my brand new, favorite pair of white sneakers. Then he tried to kiss me with a chunk of barf on his chin and down his shirt. It was very unattractive, to say the least.
