a loud cough escapes from gianna's lips as her eyes shoot open. she immediately winces once she realizes that the nurse is injecting her daily vitamins into her body through a syringe and into her arm. she never liked it, but she simply got used to it since it was a routine that started ever since she was twelve.

'good morning, imelda.' she greets the nurse, not with a smile, but with a roll of her eyes. she liked imelda, really, but not when she was pushing a needle through her arm.

'morning, gia. i'm almost done, hold on.' imelda replies as she pushes the last few drops inside the syringe into gianna's bloodstream.

'okay, there you go.' imelda pats gianna gently on the shoulder once finished.

'is there anything new today? anything at all?' gianna asks with hope in her voice as she rubbed her arm. she has been asking imelda this every morning for two weeks now.

she had heard from a patient named kathy that something extravagant and amazing would happen soon. but then again, she was a schizophrenic, so she wasn't really very reliable.

but still, gianna couldn't help it but to hope. it's been the same for five entire years in the hospital, and she just couldn't wait for change.

'we have a new patient in the other room.' imelda answers as she helped gianna tie her hair in a braid. 'can you tell me about her? what she's like?' gianna asks, immediately assuming that they got a new girl patient. the hospital was mostly composed of women and the elderly.

'oh, he's lovely. such a nice kid, he is.' imelda says.

  'he?'

'oh yes dear, the new patient's a boy. were you expecting a girl?' imelda asks with a slight raise of her eyebrows.

'no, i wasn't. well, kind of. can i go meet him though? you know i never leave my room.' gianna asks quite excitedly. she was already on her wheelchair when imelda stopped her.

'gia, you know what the doctor said. you aren't supposed to leave your room. i'm sorry but i'm afraid i can't let you go see him.'

'what? no, you said he was in the other room. that isn't fair. i promise i won't have a seizure or something, just let me meet him. i need friends imelda.' gianna begged the nurse.

imelda looked at the brunette that was pouting at her in such a way that reminded her of her little daughter sofia.

'no, mija. i can't do that, i'll lose my job. ive given you enough exceptions.' it saddened imelda when she saw gianna's cute pout become replaced by a frown. gianna was the type of person you always wanted to be happy.

'okay, imelda. sorry i asked. i knew it wouldn't work.' gianna was already getting off of the wheelchair while looking at the ground. imelda couldn't handle seeing her beloved patient while she was sad.

'alright, mija. this has to be the last time, okay? dr. flammel will surely lose it if she finds out that you left the room.'

gianna smiled bright at imelda. she took imelda's hand in hers. 'thank you, thank you.'

and with that, imelda assisted gianna back onto the wheelchair then pushed her in front of the new patient's door.
