Tess and I couldn't be discharged yet, we had to wait for my mum to get there. Tess lied that her parents were abroad, and she was all alone in Kenya. Since she did not sustain any serious injuries, the doctor did not bother calling her parents.

Mum got to the hospital worried; the doctor had told her that her daughter was at the hospital together with a friend who was in a critical condition. The first thing that came to mum's head was that Haman and I had been involved in an accident.

She found me seated with Tess at the waiting bay and when she saw that I was okay, she rushed towards me, hugged me and sighed heavily with relieve.

"What happened? Where is Haman?" She then asked looking around and saw Tess.

"He is in the theater." Tess replied.

She figured that it would be hard for me to answer that question, so she answered it for me. Mum turned towards her and asked;

"What are you doing here?"

Tess did not reply; she knew that there were lines she wouldn't cross, and being rude to my mother was one of those lines. She just faced down in shame, turned away and began walking away.

"No Tess, stay!" I said to her as I grabbed her hand.

"Mum, I don't care what you think about Tess, but she is my friend. She saved my life today and she is not evil like you think she is." I then said to mum.

She realized that she had overreacted, hence she swallowed her ego and apologized to Tess. She then went back to the part where Tess had said that Haman was in the surgery room.

"What happened? Did you two get involved in an accident on your way to school?" Mum asked.

"Wait, he was driving you to school?" Tess asked shocked.

"What do you mean by that?" Mum asked sounding totally confused.

Before any of us could reply, the doctor interrupted our conversation and asked mum if she was Haman's mother.

"No, I am Herm's mother but his mother is a good friend of mine." Mum replied.

"Call her please, we need her to sign an agreement before we can continue with the surgery." The doctor said.

"What agreement?" Mum asked.

"Just call her and tell her to get here as fast as she can; he doesn't have much time to wait." The doctor replied.

"I can sign on her behalf; we are close friends." Mum said.

"Ma'am, Haman is in a very critical condition and this surgery is a fifty fifty operation. He might wake up from that surgical table or not; hence we need his biological parents or legal guardians to sign an agreement to foresee the surgery. They need to know the risks involved and by signing the agreement, the hospital can only promise to do everything we can to save his life. We cannot carry out such a delicate operation without the parent's approval." The doctor replied.

When mum heard that it was that serious, she took her phone and stepped aside to call Nancy; Haman's mum. As mum was making the call, I turned to Tess and tears just began to flow out of my eyes.

"Haman will die because of me." I said weeping.

"No dear, it wasn't your fault and the doctor said that there is a fifty percent chance of survival." Tess replied as she hugged me tightly.

The hug was tight and long, but it didn't make me feel better; I just kept crying when I imagined how life was going to be after all this nightmare was over. If Haman survived, he was going to jail for assault; and if he died, his mother was going to forever blame me for the death of her son.

I had not told the cops that Haman tried to strangle me; I just said that he violently handled me with beatings. Tess as well recorded a statement of assault and she omitted the attempted murder; I had told her to do so.

"Darling, he was the one who attacked you and if we couldn't have acted, he would have killed you, if not us both. It is not your fault at all." Tess said as she patted my back.

Mum overheard her and she became curious to know what she was talking about.

"Who attacked you?" She asked sounding confused and curious at the same time.

"No one." I replied trying to wipe my tears.

"Herm, who attacked you? Tess, what are you talking about?" Mum asked staring at me, then at Tess.

"She is your mum Herm, just tell her what happened." Tess said to me.

There was a silence for a few seconds, then I took a deep breath and said;

"Haman attacked us."

"How? Where?" Mum asked with her tone going high.

"As he drove me to school, his car got a puncture and he did not have a spare wheel. We agreed he take the car to the garage, and I take a bus to school. I waited for the bus for almost two hours, then I decided to call a friend from school to come pick me up. I had to buy some things in town which I didn't get at home, so he first took me to town before dropping me to my hostel. When we got to the hostel, I found Haman seated there waiting for me. He helped me carry the bags, then when we got into my room, he began asking me who the guy who had dropped me off was.

I didn't want quarrels with him, so I told him that I had taken an Uber; but he just kept expressing his jealous character. Joe is just a friend and even Tess knows that I only love Haman because I am ever talking about him, but he got to a point and I just lost my temper; I talked rude to him." I said timidly then observed the look on my mum's face.

"Go on!" Mum said sounding impatient.

"In return he slapped me and I retaliated by pushing him. He got angry and began strangling me as he slapped me, then Tess walked in at tried to stop him; he attacked her too. Tess began screaming and the people who came to our rescue attacked Haman and began beating him up." I said with a shaky voice.

Just then Nancy walked into the hospital's building; she spotted us where we were and began walking towards us. She looked really worried, and that filled my stomach with butterflies because I had no idea what her reaction would be when she heard that I was involved in getting her son into the situation he was in.....
