"Where is Haman?" She asked with a tone of deep fear.
I did not have the courage to reply to her question, and neither did Tess; for the first time ever, I saw Tess feeling scared. Since my mum was her best friend and coming from her would sound much better, she took the burden of replying to Nancy's questions.
"He is on a life support machine in the theater awaiting surgery. The doctors are waiting for you to sign some agreement for them to go ahead with the surgery." Mum replied to her.
"What happened to him?" Nancy asked with a tone filled with mixed reactions.
"First sign the agreement Nancy then the others will come later; the doctors need to begin the surgery as soon as possible." Mum replied calmly.
Nancy followed the doctor to her office and signed the agreement, then she came back to where we were; I could see both fear and anger written allover her face.
"They are not sure if they can save his life!" She said with a desperate tone; tears had began building up in her eyes.
My mum hugged her tight and assured her that her boy was going to be okay. Nancy then asked what had happened, and my mum just stared at Tess and I, then she said;
"Girls, go wait for me in the car."
I had never seen my mum look so worried before; I had no idea why she asked Tess and I to go and wait for her in her car. I stared at her for a couple of seconds, then I took the car keys and we began to walk away. After taking a couple of steps from where they were, I overheard mum tell Nancy;
"It was an accident; he was involved in an accident."
I just turned my head and took a quick glance at mum, and she gave me the look she always gave me every time she had my back. I felt guilty that mum had to lie to her best friend so as to protect me, but there was nothing I could do.
I knew that the lie would temporarily work; but if Haman was going to survive, Nancy was going to know the truth sooner or later because he had to be arraigned to court for the charges being filed against him by the University's Students Welfare department. We could not drop the charges since the University had gotten involved, hence only death would keep mum's lie from separating her and her best friend.
I would never wish for Haman to die despite all the things he had done to me, hence I just preferred our family to lose our closest family friends, but Haman survives the surgery. Tess and I got into the car and she tried making me feel better. The lie which I heard mum tell was bothering me so much; I couldn't even concentrate on what Tess was saying to me.
"Should we tell Nancy the truth before it is too late?" I then asked after a while of deep thinking.
"What are you talking about?" Tess replied pretending not to know what I meant.
