CARTER
"Please wake up soon Carter. You guys are my family, and a family is never the same if someone dies"
It was then I knew I had to stay alive, for Emma and the guys, and to think I only met Emma a couple months ago. And not exactly under the best image.
I waited, recalling times with the guys, and some with Emma in them, on several occasions all I remembered was Emma. I was so glad that it was her in the library that night instead of the real librarian.
I felt my body getting heavier and heavier, until I felt the scratchy material of the hospital sheets, and the burning of my dry throat.
"Carter?" I looked to my left to see Brandon scramble up from his chair, dumping his homework onto the floor.
"Water" I demanded trying to moisten my throat.
He hurriedly filled a small plastic cup with sink water and held it to my face.
"I can drink by myself." I told him, ducking away from the cup shoved under my nose.
"Sorry" he let me hold the cup and I downed the liquid, not quenching my thirst.
"Where's Emma?"
"Who's Emma?" He asked.
"Oh, she didn't tell you?"
His face twisted in confusion.
"Who tell me what?"
Poor Brandon, and possibly Connor.
"Valerie's real name is Emma."
"What" he looked a little bit hurt, but mostly still confused.
"Yeah, so where's Emma?"
Brandon shook his head.
"I can't believe she didn't tell me"
"Brandon!" I got his attention back.
"Oh she went down to the cafe to get some coffee, otherwise she hasn't left you're side.
I smiled at the thought yet felt guilty that I was probably causing her to have sleep deprivation.
"Ok, I'm gonna go down"
I sat up but was stopped by Brandon.
"Wait Carter, something happened in the car accident."
I swallowed nervously, hoping it didn't have anything to do with Emma.
"What?"
"Umm" Brandon shifted on his feet and looked at the floor.
"The impact of the truck hit and damaged your lower spinal cord."
My stomach dropped as I tried to move my legs.
"What do you mean? Why can't I feel my legs Brandon?"
I tried to push myself from the bed.
"Carter" he pushed me back down "Carter, you're paralyzed from the waist down."
I froze when I heard those words. my world stopped, my life was over. I felt weak, vulnerable, I felt broken.
*****
"No I'm a paraplegic from a car accident."
"Yeah, Carter was in a car accident too."
I smiled at her as we stood outside of my hospital room, she still hasn't figured out that I was really Carter, not a whole other person, not even when I'd told her I was Carter.
