Maria
It's been a day since we left St. Petersburg and I think we've been doing pretty great on our own. That was until 5 minutes ago when Tom came running into the safe place and startled the shit out of me.
"What?" I worried as he pulled some things into a backpack and I threw on my jacket. "Tom? What's going on?" I asked.
"We have to go now! They somehow found the safe place. We've got to go." He explained quickly as I nodded and we ran out just before the whole building blew up and people screamed in the streets.
"Tom." I gasped as he shielded my body with his own and the backpack.
"It's ok, let's go... quickly." He said as we ran from the scene and fled into the thick crowds. He kept a firm grasp on my hand so I wouldn't get away from him, but I could feel his panic from how tight his hand was around mine and how he would tense everytime someone bumped into us. He kept one of his hands over his pocket where he hid his gun just in case things went haywire.
We kept with the crowd until they started to thin out and we booked it into the trees near Kimalase, Estonia.
I was scared, but Tom lead the way with confidence and that reassured me quickly as we continued our journey.
"I don't think the safe places are safe anymore." He laughed dryly as I gave his hand a light squeeze and followed him silently before he pulled out his GPS and we followed the path.
After a few hours, we stopped at a restaurant for something to eat before we continued on.We hid in a few places before we finally found a car.
"Stay hidden, I'm going to try to hotwire the truck." He said.
"Do you know how?" I asked.
"No, but now's a good time to learn." He said.
"I know how." I said as I walked over. "You keep watch, I'll hotwire the truck." He gave me a look before he stood guard and I got it to start up. "Come on." I waved him over as I got into the passenger seat and he turned it over and started her up before we floored it out of there.
"Where did you learn to do that?" He laughed.
"I wanted to be a mechanic like my dad was, before he got into politics, so I took classes in auto mechanics when I was still in school. So... yeah." I shrugged as he turned on the working radio and 'She's so Mean' by Matchbox 20 came on.
"Always a great song." I grinned as he laughed.
"You like that kind of music?"
"As a matter of fact, yes, I do. Got a problem?" I snipped playfully.
"No, I just never took you for that kind of girl." He laughed.
"I like music, not just one kind, Tom." I smiled as we entered into Poland.
"Ok... hey put up your hood and put on your sunglasses." He said as he did the same.
"What's wrong?" I asked as like 8 girls came running over with their phones squealing in Polish.
"I think they recognize you." I said as I shrunk lower in my seat as they snapped pictures.
"You feel like running again?" He asked.
"If we have to." I groaned as he floored it and got us out of there just to pull into a store parking lot. We ditched the car and bought some lunch and new clothes to change into so no one would recognize us.I slipped on the combat boots from a few changes ago and met Tom outside who had sandwiches, drinks and an old Ford pickup truck with the hood popped.
"Mind doing the honors?" He bowed as I laughed and rolled my eyes before I hotwired the rusty red truck and got it started before we hopped in and the squealing if tires was the only thing left in our wake.
"You look nice." Tom said as I rolled my eyes.
"Thanks, you clean up pretty nice yourself, Spider Man." I nudged his shoulder.
"So you are a fan." He grinned as he parked us in the back of a supermarket parking lot before we ate our sandwiches and laid down in the bed of the truck with heavy blankets covering us and pillows beneath our heads.
"The stars are so beautiful tonight." I whispered as he nodded before we both fell asleep.
