Veronica's PoV"The world is an unforgiving place, you'll face difficulties and hardships but promise me you'll never give up, Nica , promise me"
I woke up in tears as the last words of my mother kept replaying in my head, this dream, this nightmare, has haunted me ever since my mother passed away. I was just 10 at that time when my mother committed suicide and left me all alone in this brutal world.
I honestly try not to judge or condemn her , I try to understand her decision to leave me on my own, maybe it was because she couldn't stand living in a world without her mate, my father, who died in a battle against a rival pack or simply because her love for me wasn't valid a reason for her to stay, and I finally understood the difference between family and relatives. My mother was just a relative.
But every cloud has a silver lining, I may have lost my parents but my eyes were now open to the harsh realities of this world or should I say of the Supernatural world.
Contradictory to what humans believe Werewolves do exist, I am werewolf and belong to the Crescent pack. Our pack was known for their brutality in battle, they took none captive and left no survivors. Other neighbouring packs hated us for our savagery and did not fail to return the same courtesy to any member of the Crescent moon pack that trespassed their territory.
I hated everything about about my pack, especially the so called "hierarchy", in which everyone had a place and those at the bottom where not even considered as members of the packs. The hierarchy only favoured those at the very top, The Alpha and his Luna, The Beta, The Gamma, Pack warriors, Pack Members with other responsibilities and at the bottom, the omegas.
Many others like me had no choice but to become omegas, each of them had a story, a sad story to tell. After my parents died, none of my relatives , took custody of me, so I was left with no choice but to become an omega at age Ten. The head omega Miranda, took custody of me and she taught me how to serve without question. At first I was hesitant to trust her but her friendly nature quickly won me over and I have lived with her for the past 7 years. She is the mother I wished I had, she helped me get through my first shift and basically thought me everything I know about being a werewolf.
I sometimes wonder what I had done to deserve my current status as an Omega, or why people could not just see themselves as equals but instead almost everyone is blinded by their pride and their ego. Equality could not exist in my pack, not when the pack is bound by fear of the Alpha and his minions and not by loyalty.
*************
I check the time and it's 5:03am, I have about an hour before going to work at Mr Gale's house. Every Omega was assigned to a particular household mainly those who were in the Alphas good graces, Mr Gale was one of them, he was the head of the pack warriors and lived in a modest one story house made of wood with his mate and two snobby, arrogant and disrespectful kids, well the two apples did not fall far from the tree. Mr Gale was a very rude individual and as fate would have it his mate ,Cassandra, happened to be identical in character. She never wasted an opportunity to humiliate me in front of other Pack members and despite my best efforts, I was never able to please her. I was probably an outlet to release all her pent up frustrations about not having a male child. Her two daughters, Becky and Gina , would one day have families of their own and without a male child their was no one to carry the family name and legacy....... well according to her. The female population was undermined in My Pack, a female could not become a Pack warrior or an Alpha. It was unheard of in any of our neighbouring packs, an unspoken taboo.
In the eyes of the men, our main responsibility was to serve as breeding machines for the assured growth of the pack. Call me sexist, but I hate all men aside my father and Trimethius ( pronounced Tri-mi-thius) , my best friend.
With that thought in my mind I get dressed and head downstairs for breakfast, it's the usual , a single slice of bread with jam. I share the house with 9 other omegas, all females, but I mostly keep to myself and avoid any social interaction of any kind.
After I had finished eaten, I head towards Mr Gales house which was a 5 min walk from the female Omega frat house. On my way, I saw another omega, a young girl about 12 or 13 begging on the streets, her face lit up as I approached her and gave her a coin, which was all I had on me but she probably needed it more. What had the child done to deserve such treatment? and those with the power to actually make a difference turn a blind eye.
I arrived at the Mr Gales house and let myself in. I walked straight to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the lazy inhabitants of the household and after a few minutes they came downstairs for breakfast one after the other. They barely acknowledged my presence and after they had seated, I proceed to serve them breakfast.
"Veronica I want more bacon" Gina demanded rudely as if asking politely was a crime punishable by death. I scurried over with the frying pan in my hand and added more bacon on her plate. " and Veronica? when Josh comes send him up" Josh was her idiotic boyfriend who was twice as dumb as they were. I simply replied with a meek "yes miss Becky".
After they were done, I cleared up after them and headed towards the sink to wash the dishes which was the first task of the day in a long list of chores.
I had to break this cycle of misery but unfortunately for me their was only two ways out of this.
Go rogue or find my mate and hope that he belongs to a higher social status than me. I lied, their was only one option for me, going rogue is not an option.————————————————————————
