Dawn arose on the horizon, gently waking Abe from his slumber. He had ridden through the night until he arrived in Connecticut and if he were being honest, every bone in his body ached as if broken. He wanted nothing more than a nice bath and a good sleep in bed with Mary and little Sprout. But he had to meet Ben at their agreed upon location. So, Abe wrapped his coat tighter around his frame and urged his horse into a gallop.
A mere hour later, the dense Connecticut forest cleared to reveal an open field. The late summer sun cast a golden glow on the uneven grass in front of him. Abe found it beautiful, but tragic. He knew many souls departed Earth from this field. He knew the soil was mixed with blood. Sighing, Abe pulled his horse through the grass to where a figure stood stroking his horse's mane. It was Ben.
"Benjamin," Abe said quietly with a nod. His friend's eyes were swollen and red. Abe knew his friend was just as heartbroken as he was.
"How is she?"
Abe sighed and shook his head. "She disappeared a week ago, Ben. My father has sent men, I've sent men...no one's seen her."
"Disappeared? How?"
Abe shook his head again. No one knew.
"I have to look for her. She could be alone in the middle of nowhere, in danger. Or dead. I don't know-"
Abe grabbed Ben in an embrace and allowed him to cry into his shoulder. He had had his moment with Mary a couple of nights ago and knew how vital it was to not keep everything hidden. What is in the darkness would find the light eventually.
"I have to look for her, Abe," Ben said after a few moments of silence. "I owe it to her father. I owe it to myself. I have to."
Abe nodded. "I understand. Take care of yourself and when you find her, have Caleb send word."
"I will. And if she shows her face in Setauket, send word immediately."
The two gentlemen gave their goodbyes before cantering away in opposite directions.

Liza felt the bullet before it even hit her side. It seared through her flesh like a comet in the sky - hot and quick. It took all of her strength to not scream profanities to the sky. Instead, Liza bit her bottom lip until a metallic taste flooded into her mouth. She jammed a knife into her right side and pushed the small silver ball with the blade until it rested in her bloodied palm.
"Looks like it hurts, that one," a young man mumbled. He was a private in Liza's regiment and as much as she had tried to avoid him, he seemed hellbent on becoming her friend.
"It's not that bad," she said through gritted teeth. "I could be dead."
"That's for certain," the private said with a slight chuckle. "The name's John, by the way. Johnathan Stewart."
Liza gave John a limp hand. "Lawrence Alcott."
"Where are ya from, Lawrence?"
Liza willed herself to calm her impatience. She only had a few more days here before she would desert her regiment and join a branch of the Rangers. As long as Robert Rogers didn't show his face, Liza was convinced she could pull off her plan.
"Virginia," was all she said. John took the hint and sauntered off towards a group of soldiers on the other end of camp. Liza was finally alone.
In a weird way, Liza was glad for the burning pain in her side. It took the edge off of the grief she still felt raging through her veins. She had been successful in not shooting every Redcoat in sight. She had been good at keeping her anger under control. But by God, she was done stifling what needed to be allowed to explode. She would burn until every last Redcoat became ashes under her feet. If they could be merciless, so could she.
