Lily looked at the measurements again and frowned, she picked up a pencil and calculated the substance in the sand that Scorpius had in his palm, she bit the bottom of her lip in concentration, the equation was supposed to come to zero on both sides, instead, she got a zero and a freaking 27 on the other side.
"Uummh, Score? Did you do the calculations right? I am getting something totally different, I guess we are supposed to use less sand? "she said passing the paper she had been calculating on to him.
He didn't even look at it, instead he gave her his signature smirk, "Why would I care with calculations? Al did them, you know Al, he is never wrong."
Lily bit her lip again, what he said was true, Al was never wrong, he was an academic genius for Merlin's sake, and he was in seventh year. But, she was smarter than him when it came to potions, she always has been, but not by much. The potion they were currently making was supposed to take people a few seconds in the past and make them relive their most embarrassing memories, just for seconds, five seconds at the most. They planned to convince a house elf to put it in the pumpkin juice at the welcoming feast, a perfect prank for the beginning of the year. They only had a few minutes left, they had to hurry.
Lily was a Gryffindor, but she always hang out with the Slytherin seventh year crowd because Albus was her best friend, and by proxy, Scorpius too. Plus girls sickened her. She lived for pranking and quidditch, which most girls weren't interested in. She was fine with the boys in her year, but hanging out with Scorpius and Albus just added that extra thrill to life that was lacking with the other boys.
Scorpius was a daredevil, willing to try out anything and everything. Albus was smart, a smooth talker and a favourite with the teachers, the brains behind most pranks, they were barely ever caught. Lily completed the trio. Although two years younger than the boys, she knew her way around Hogwarts better than anyone, and she was a girl who behaved like a boy, the boys totally liked her.
Scorpius made to pour the sand in the bubbling container but Lily held his arm back.
"We should probably wait for Al, "Lily said giving the white sand a wary look.
Scorpius gave her a dubious look, "Wait for Al? Are you crazy? The guy is too engrossed in his headboy duties to care, by the time he arrives here, the feast will be over!"
Lily glanced nervously around Mourning Myrtle's bathroom, for the prank to work, they had to miss most of the feast, including the sorting, which, Al, being head boy couldn't.
"Where did you get that time sand from?"Lily asked.
"The manor, Al and I were going through old things in the basement and we stumbled on it. "
"Are you sure, absolutely sure Al said a handful? If you put in a handful of that thing, according to my calculations, it will send people twenty seven years into the past. Plus it might explode right here. "
His eyes shone with mischief, "Don't be a nerd Potter, come on, we are wasting time,"he said. Once again, he made to pour the sand in the cauldron, Lily grabbed his arm, he knocked over the bubbling froth of the cauldron in the process, Lily let out a yell at the hot substance spilled down her front and let go of his arm quickly.
"Red? You okay?" he asked unconsciously letting go of the sand in his palm to reach for her.
"Don't! You fool!" Lily shouted, but it was too late. The white grains of sand spilled at her feet, where the spilled potion from the cauldron was pooling. There was a loud explosion and Lily felt herself being tugged at. She tried to steady herself and hold out her hand for Scorpius but she couldn't, she was spinning, faster than anything else she had ever experienced, her body ripped through the ripples of time, sending her back into the past.
