Sophie Foster and Fitz Vacker were considered the light in the elves dark world. On the darkest days you could here them laughing together. Of course, their friends were full of light as well but Sophie and Fitz were special. They were proof you could find love in the midst of war.
They were also some of the sweetest people you could ever meet. On their way to a date they would always stop and talk to you along the way. People loved to see the bright eyed couple walking along the streets together. They were some of the strongest people separately but they made each other invincible. Both of them hated fighting but they knew they couldn't sit on the sidelines. They were at every planting service and fought in every battle hand in hand.
They were the very definition of soul mates.
Not many knew about their wedding. In the Elvin world it's unusual for elves to get married young. Sophie had just graduated from the Elite Levels, but with the war going on, nobody wanted to waste time. They said it was because they loved each other. They said it was because they couldn't wait to spend the rest of their lives with each other.
But deep down they both knew it was because either of them could die at any moment. Nobody could bear to think about what would happen if they were torn from each other.
A couple months after Sophie became Sophie Vacker, in the last battle, the Battle for Life, Fitz Vacker was stabbed in the chest with a simple dagger. Time seemed to still as elves, good and bad, heard the terrible, guttural, miserable scream that ripped from Sophie Vacker's throat as she watched the love of her life crumple to the ground. She crumpled to the ground with him.
Nobody really knew how the battle ended. All they knew was, that, as the Vacker's fell to the ground everyone and everything just... stopped. Most of the Neverseen were dead, some were captured, others went into hiding, never to surface again.
Biana Vacker placed a hand over her mouth as she watched her sister-in-law pull her brother into her lap.
Fitz Vacker looked up at his wife and smiled. He thought of their life together and smiled. He thought of the kids they could've had and smiled. He brought his hand up and cupped her cheek wiping away her tears with his thumb.
Sophie Vacker gripped her husbands hand.
"Hold on. Just a little bit longer," she said as she tore pieces of cloth from her shirt trying desperately to stop the blood flow.
"Sophie. Sophie, stop." The only thing Fitz Vacker regretted as he looked up at the beautiful face of his Cognate partner, was that he wouldn't have more time with her.
"It's too late now. I'm dying. But you aren't. I want you to live a good, long life. I love you more than I can say," he rasped, his voice gradually growing softer.
Sophie shook her head as more silent tears rolled down her face.
"Promise me. Promise me, Sophie."
"I promise," she whispered, bringing her forehead down to his.
"Good," he breathed.
Fitz Vacker died. He died in the arms of his wife. His best friend. His Cognate partner.
His friends, who had already gathered around him, were shocked. Out of all of them he seemed like the least likely to die.
Linh Song cried into her brothers shoulder as Tam Song's eyes filled with unshed tears.
Keefe Sencen just stared. He couldn't believe it. His best friend of forever was dead.
Dex Dizznee didn't know what to think. He hated the guy when he first met him but looking at his cousin he seemed to realize how much he had liked him.
