Sophia's POV
i listen to the boys out of the corner of my ear, hearing snippets of conversation. i really don't care, i'm just looking at the birds, watching for the mockingbird that reminds me of Mom. i listen, and hear her. i smile, then whistle the four-note tune Mom taught me. she sings it back, and more and more mockingbirds in the area pick up the tune. all of the notes overlap, and it creates a magical super-harmony. Cyrus looks amazed and awed, while Sime sings the words to it. i keep whistling the tune. "the daisies grow here, safe and warm. they protect you from every harm. and when the day comes to an end, they will make your soft green bed. the roses in life, have many thorns, which prick you and leave you forlorn. but the daisies will keep you safe, my young twinborns." after Sime sings these lines a few times, he stops, then a few minutes later, the birds stop, and all is left in beautiful silence. it's the kind of warm, golden silence you don't want to break. i look over at Cyrus, and his face is genuinely happy. he looks like he's glowing. But it's a serious kind of happy, without a smile, but his eyes are lit up brightly.
Cyrus's POV
i am amazed! i wish i'd have been here before their mom died. she seems like she'd be such a happy, caring person! i don't want to break the comfortable silence we are walking in, so i just enjoy the feeling, allowing my mind to wander into happy feelings.
Simon's POV
i smile, tears running down my face. i miss Mom so much in that moment, but i miss her in a bittersweet type of way, remembering happy things. i had almost forgotten about the song, until Soph whistled it, she is amazing at remembering things like this.
Sophia's POV
i take a deep breath, deciding to gently break the silence. "guys, you wanna just go back? i feel like we've already seen her." Cy nods, and we both stop, but Sime didn't notice, he just keeps walking. i smirk, dropping the handle of the wagon, then motion for Cy to be quiet. he nods, and i sneak up behind Sime, tiptoeing until i'm close enough to touch him. i think for a moment, then decide. i caw like a crow as loudly as I can, grabbing onto his shoulders and quickly letting go.
Simon's POV
i scream loudly, turning around to see what just happened. Soph is right behind me, doubled over in laughter, holding her stomach. Cy is laughing to, walking towards us with the wagon. "what is actually wrong with you?!" Soph stands up, wiping her eyes. "well, you spaced out, what else was i supposed to do?" i huff, stomping. "anything but that!" Cy looks at me innocently "well, how else were we supposed to get your attention Sime?" i huff again. "you are both so childish!" Soph and Cy high-five, still laughing away. "anyway, why did we stop?" Soph sighs, the crosses her arms. "i was wondering if you two wanted to just turn back around, if you look, it's gonna be the hottest part of the day soon, and i feel like we've already seen her." Cy nods in agreement with Soph. "alright, fine, just stop being so childish, alright?!" i huff, then grab the handle of the wagon, walking back towards the house, using my long legs to my advantage. i hear the other two laughing, and i'm about to turn around to ask what's so funny, when Cy shoots past me, with Soph on his back. she waves at me, then shouts "LAST ONE TO THE HOUSE IS A MOLDY CARROT!!" i smirk "oh, it's on!"
