winter pov

I look out the car window as the rain drops race to the bottom of the foggy glass. The clouds billow over like the blankets on my bed that have become less and less familiar to my touch. I run my fingers through my matted hair in an attempt to make myself look a little better. It doesn't really work to my advantage.

I don't want to go home. I do in a way. Then I think about my dad, school, and all the crap I have to go through. I'll be alone. I don't want to be alone. I am tempted to just grab the steering wheel and steer us backwards. We have sat in an awkward silence for over 20 minutes. Only the rain patters and muffled rumbles of thunders fill the absence of our voices in the small space inside this car.

I am on the verge of sleep. My eye lids get heavy and my head leans a bit. I keep trying to occupy myself by playing with the loose strings on my pants. I hear luke humming "take me back to the middle of no where back to the place only you and I share remember all the memories, the fireflies and make believes, kicking back in the old school yard..." Then his voice trails off and the words are like knives cutting through my soul. He stops tapping his thumbs and looks over at me. "Sorry I was just making something up, I'll stop if you want." Luke looks up to meet my gaze. "No, keep going. I want to hear." I replied. "Wait how did that go again?" Michael said from the back seat.

"Take me back to the middle of nowhere, back to the place only you and I share?" Is that it he chirped with excitement. "Yeah it's nothing." Luke shyly shook it off. By that time Michael had a notepad and pen writing down the lyrics. "You know you really have something going with that!" Michael is writing so fast. "You write music?" I asked turning completely back to face the front. "Yeah, I sing and play guitar." He answered quick. "ALL DONE HEY LUKE MAKE THAT BEAT." So again Luke taps his fingers on the steering wheel with a smirk. "Take me back to the middle of nowhere back to the place only you and I share, remember all the memories, the fireflies and make believe. Kicking back in the old school yard singing songs and our guitars this is our reality crazy stupid you and me, we know this is the way it's supposed to be." Michael stops singing. "That's all I got so far. I sit up slightly. I have an idea but I'm nervous they won't like it. I sing "so were taking the long way home, cause I don't wanna be wasting my time alone. I want to get lost and drive forever with you." I stop and look up. The shock in Luke's eyes makes me scared. "Talking bout nothing yeah whatever baby so were taking the long way home." Luke sings. Michael is like a machine writing these lyrics.

"I don't want to go back." I say before I can stop myself. "It's what's right for you." Luke explains. "I want to go to Miami." I say grabbing a strand of my hair pulling it behind my ear and tucking it there. "I just don't know Winter." He says shrugging. "Oh lighten up dude!! Let's go to Miami! We could so start a band or something! This song is pure gold. It's a money mine bro!" Michael says. "YEAH LUKE LISTEN TO HIM!" I say smiling. Luke looks over at me and shakes his head in a way to say he surrenders.

So, here we are on interstate 40. The exit to go back home is a mile away and I'm getting butterflies because I'm scared he will turn off onto the highway. He doesn't. He passes the exit and I just feel so relieved.
