 ☮ My Almost Lover

My life isn’t perfect but somehow, you made me see the beauty through all those imperfections. You opened my eyes. You may not know it, but you definitely stole my heart. And since then, you held it in your hands and I hoped you will never ever break it.

But you still did, without knowing it.

I was just this normal goody good girl who’s afraid of getting in trouble and failing my grades, while you’re the kind of boy who doesn’t give a care in the world. You’re carefree while I’m naïve. You have your own set of friends but you’re still quiet. And it just hit me. We’ve been schoolmates for years but I was only given that short span of time to get to know you. Which I did; my curious, friendly nature took over and I bombarded you with questions like, “How old are you?” or “What’s your favorite color?”

You answered with your quiet voice but you did not offer me a smile. But I continued that; I spoke to you; asked you questions. A year passed and that one day came when my friendliness seemed to give up and just let you be. Of course I knew you didn’t care. I bet you were even glad that I stopped talking to you. I was probably just a nuisance to you.

But then, I was transferred to the seat beside you and it seemed as if the world just turned upside down. I ignore you but somehow, you always come up with an idea for me to go running back to you. You hide my book, my bag. You tap me on the shoulder and when I look around to see who it was, you pretend to be asleep. You purposely bump into me whenever I’m talking to my friends. And then, that unforgettable day came.

I was the only girl left in the room and you were also still there with your friends waiting for you by the door. I was fixing my things when I saw you grab my water bottle.

You smirked down at me while I glared at you.

“Give it,” I huffed, holding out my hand.

“You’ve been very quiet lately,” you remarked, completely ignoring my statement.

“People change,” I said as I tried to snatch it from your grasp. You only held it higher.

“I miss the old you,” you said, looking at my face, making me feel slightly uncomfortable. We locked eyes for a second but then the teasing glint reappeared in your eyes. And so did your smirk. And I just glared back at you.

“Dude! Just grab her and kiss her already!” I heard one of your friends shout from outside. You looked a bit shocked and shy for a second but your smirk appeared again. And you stared at me.

Slowly, you walked towards me and stopped. Our bodies were almost touching and our faces were so close that your breath fanned across my face.

“I miss the old you. Please be that girl again and don’t ever change again,” you said to me, looking straight into my eyes. You smiled, a real happy smile, and left, taking my water bottle with you.

I was momentarily rooted on my spot and it took me a few seconds to react. I didn’t jump in joy. I stomped and huffed in annoyance. And I went home, thinking of my precious water bottle that was now in the hands of someone so mischievous and also those words you said that somehow triggered something inside me.
