The moment you had tripped over his sleeping form in the hallway (on the day you arrived at the mansion,) an overwhelming feeling took over him. To protect you, a fragile human, was what his heart most desired. And so he made sure to spend every day with you, making you his compagna provvisora.
Gradually, the two of you began to harbour romantic feelings for each other and believing that love was sadly one-sided, Leonardo and you decided it was best to conceal it, that way you would avoid hurting each other.
It all changed, however, one cloudy morning while you were hanging the clothes in the vast and colourful gardens of the mansion. Leonardo approached you with quiet feet with the intention to take you out to town for he had some errands there.
As he was about to greet you, a gentle breeze came, fluttering and lifting your skirt just enough for him to see the tattoo marking the delicate skin on the back of your right knee. It was a tattoo he recognised all too well for it perfectly matched the symbol marking his chest, right above his lonely heart.
The realisation left him stunned, frozen to the spot. You, the object of his affection, were the mate of his solitary soul. A feeling of dread paralysed his body. He needed to leave and clear his mind.
Feeling eyes on you, you turned around to see a troubled Leonardo behind you.
"Morning, Leonardo... Is... everything alright?" You tilted your head, inspecting him with your gentle eyes.
Risen from his reverie, he forced a faint smile and greeted you back. "Scusa, cara mia. I have some things to take care of in town. I'll be back around noon. I came here to tell you that."
You squinted your eyes lightly, noticing his odd demeanour. "Oh... Okay. Don't worry about it, Leonardo. Take care, alright?"
"Yes. See you later..." Without sparing you another glace, he hurriedly walked away, leaving you puzzled.
The rest of the day you spent it thinking about him. He had acted so weirdly in the morning, you were genuinely concerned. And so you decided to wait for him outside, by the gate, ignoring the grey clouds up in the sky announcing a heavy downpour.
With every passing minute, you grew more and more restless. Worry was surrounding your heart, gnawing at it with its malicious and sharp claws. It was way past noon and he was nowhere to be seen. Where was he? Why had he acted so weird?
A million unanswered questions filled your head, turning you into a ball of anxiety and nerves. So worried you were that you didn't hear him calling your name.
Leonardo placed a gentle hand on top of your head, startling you. "Are you alright, cara mia? "What are you doing outside?"
Your eyes shimmered with affection when you gazed up at him. "Leonardo, you're back..." His wistful golden eyes were filled with worry and something else that you were not quite able to distinguish.
"It's about to rain, we should go inside." No sooner had he stated that, than a few raindrops fell upon your nose and cheeks.
"Tell me something first."
"What is it?"
"I'm using my daily question, so I do hope you'll answer honestly." You gave him a stern gaze. "Why were you acting so oddly this morning?"
Peering up at the sky when he heard the faint rumbling of thunder, he said, "(y/n), we should really go inside."You scowled. "Not until you answer my question." You planted your feet firmly on the floor when he gently urged you to move. At that moment, it started pouring.
Heaving a deep sigh, Leonardo quickly took off his coat and covered you with it. "This is why," he replied, pulling his half-unbuttoned shirt to the side as he revealed his mark to you.
Cold rain streamed down his collar and further down his exposed chest, but all you could focus on was his tattoo.
"That's..."
"Yes." He nodded his head, damped hair clinging to his forehead and cheeks.
"Oh, Leonardo... you should have said something." Tears prickled at the corners of your eyes.
"I—"
Overwhelmed with emotion, you gripped him firmly by the shirt, bringing him close to you as you pressed your lips to his in an impulsive kiss. Your eyes fluttered shut the second your lips brushed against his and the last thing you saw was surprise filling his gorgeous eyes.
Leonardo responded almost instantly by wrapping one his arms around your waist while he cupped your cheek with his hand. His lips were warm and they tasted sweet like his cigarillos mixed with the taste of rain that was leaving both of you drenched.
Slowly pulling away, you apologized, feeling you cheeks turn a dark shade of vermillion. "I'm sorry, I got carried away. I—"
A low moan reverberated in your throat the moment he claimed your lips, holding you as tight as he could against him. His kiss was intense and passionate. He conveyed everything he felt for you in it. All that longing, all that desire, all that love. You felt it all. It was overwhelmingly pleasant. You were so overjoyed by his kiss that a few tears rolled down your cheeks.
When he finally pulled away, his cheeks were flushed and there was affection in his gaze. You were not able to contain a simper at the sight.
"When I found out you were my soulmate I tried to distance myself from you..." He sighed, ashamed of his actions.
"Why?"
"I... I've been looking for my soulmate for a very long time, cara mia. I've been so lonely for so long... Longer than you could ever fathom. I suppose I panicked a little. I'm sorry." He leaned down to rest his forehead against yours.
"You, silly man." You cupped his cheek tenderly. "I understand, though... it is a bit scary."
"It is, isn't it?" His lips quirked up into a sad but relieved smile as he nuzzled into your touch.
"But this feels right." You grinned, shivering lightly.
He sighed, unable to restrain his smile as he nodded in agreement. "We are dripping wet. Let's get you inside, yeah?" He picked you up. The warmth emanating off his body was all you needed to forget how cold the rain was making you feel. "I'll draw a hot bath for you. I wouldn't forgive myself if my sweet cara got a cold while under my care," he stated, peering down at you, smiling brightly as his nose lightly bumped yours.
Once the two of you were warm and dry, you would have a proper talk about what had happened at the gate, about how you two felt for each other and about the tattoo.
Finding your soulmate in the 19th Century France was not what you had expected at all. You would never have considered staying permanently at a mansion filled with vampires, but it all changed when you fell in love with Leonardo. And now that you found out he was your soulmate, you were more than eager to spend the rest of your life by his side.
