Everything happened so quickly.
In the space of a single breath, the man to my left had pounced on the third man, crouched over him in a fashion not dissimilar to a panther, and had decapitated him in a single swift, silent motion. He looked back at me, smirking: a smirk I knew only to be Scott's.
Nathan, meanwhile, had already begun work on my handcuffs, struggling to release me from them. Scott rolled his eyes and muttered, "do I have to do everything?", gently touching my shoulder as he reached my wrists and freed them in one tug. The chains fell to the floor with a metallic clank, shocking me out of my stupor. Nathan guided me towards a back door, and I immediately broke out into a sprint, desperate to escape the cold, unfriendly bank that wanted me for all the wrong reasons.
Silently, Nathan jogged beside me, my flat out sprint paling in comparison to his leisurely run. Suddenly I was swept off my feet, Scott impatiently running ahead, carrying me bridal style. With the wind in my hair and my saviour at my side, I felt perhaps the freest I had ever in my life, free from a lying friend, a dark bunker, and the people who wanted to use me for my blood.
As we approached a busy market, Scott set me down, Nathan quickly catching up.
"What now?" I asked, bewildered at the quick change in setting. I had gone the last few hours thinking it would at least be morning, but alas in the market street it appeared to be midnight, the time of peak vampire activity, with the clear desert skies revealing thousands of stars.
"We get supplies, and we move," Scott replied, "Nathan, how much blood do we have?"
Nathan removed his backpack, and peered inside, "just a litre of B, so not enough,"
I pulled both vampires aside into an inconspicuous alleyway, "just take some of mine,"
Scott looked surprised, "Are you sure?"
I nodded, surprising myself with my newfound trust in them. Nathan produced a needle from his bag, and gently drew some blood from me. I was completely unfazed, having spent the last month having needles constantly protruding from my skin.
"Trade it for some cheaper blood, I'll stay here with Ebony," Scott commanded, and Nathan nodded, leaving the secluded alleyway to just me and Scott.
Scott sighed, leaning against the wall. This was the first time that I'd noticed some sweat on his brow, something I'd never seen before on a vampire. I wiped it with my thumb, confused.
"How.." I began
"I haven't eaten in a while. The run exhaust-" he cut himself off as another vampire approached the alleyway, and began walking through it. In one swift motion, Scott turned, pinning me against the wall, his mouth at my neck. The vampire's footsteps echoed past us, each thud inching further away.
Scott removed his lips from my neck, his face inches away from mine.
"Drink from me," I said.
Scott looked taken aback, "I couldn't, I don't want to taint your blood,"
"You're still planning on selling me?"
Scott hesitated. "No."
"What changed?"
"Revenge. On Mason," Scott replied, and I couldn't help but feel deflated at his response, until he tucked a stray hair behind my ear, "And you."
"Do it, then. I need some way of saying thank you,"
Scott nodded slowly, "Of course."
He was gentler than any other vampire I had come across, carefully moving my hair aside before sinking his teeth into my neck. It was sharp at first, but as he removed his teeth and began to drink, his venom numbed the pain and sent pleasure through my body. I grabbed his arms, gasping, locked in a deadly embrace as he continued to drink.
"Scott-" I struggled to breathe, weakly tapping his arms as I grew weaker and weaker. He took this as a sign to stop, and kissed my neck before drawing back.
"Was it too much?" He asked as we both panted, adrenaline flooding my veins as my blood still hung on his lips.
Then, he kissed me.
My hands tangled in his hair, his arms around my waist. I could taste my metallic blood on his lips as he deepened the kiss, tongue crossing the threshold into my mouth and filling me with passion that I didn't want to stop.
"Scott." Nathan's voice was barely audible above my thundering pulse, "Ebony."
Scott rolled his eyes, breaking away from me.
"We have to go," Nathan said, and Scott nodded, eyes still locked with mine.
Just as I turned to follow Nathan out of the alley, Scott's cold breath gave me goosebumps as he murmured into my ear.
"You tasted amazing,"
